Hello,

I just bought this lens and just wondering of this is normal for the lens. When zooming in and out there is marked resistance between 70-200. Its smooth but you can fell it tightening up. If its a problem i want to address it before its too late.

Thanks much, Bill

Bill, I have this lens. It is smooth from 28 to 300. However moving from 300 to 28 it does stiffen up at about 200 and remains the same back to 28. The difference in resistance is not great and I never noticed it until now. ;)

Thanks David. It moves but there definitely does seem to be some resistance. I am not a pro, heck Im not even an amateur, I just like nice stuff. So I want to be sure it is working properly as it wasnt cheap. I bought it off Amazon so I can return it if I have to.

Hi Bill.

I have the same lens and experience the same slight stiffness you described. There's nothing wrong with the lens. By the way, it's a beautiful walk around lens. The 28-300 plus a 50mm 1.4 are the only two lenses I use on my D700. Almost every picture I've posted on UHH was taken with my 28-300.

John

You bought a great lens. I use mine all the time. I don't think there is anything wrong with yours. I did notice a slight, as in very slight, stiffening between 70-200. The action still should be smooth and it should not affect the working of the lens.

Thanks Ebrunner. It does seem to be a little more than slight but it works fine.

I have this lens and it is smooth all the way through in either direction. I would address the issue now rather than later. Good luck, Dave

Any opinions on how this lens compares with the 18-300 MM from Nikon?

The 18-300mm is for a DX and the 28-300mm is for a FX. Both are excellent !!!

Amazon is sending me a new one. Better to be sure now than worry later. Thanks all.

Lens came in early, have it on hand. Now I feel foolish because the replacement feels the same. There is resistance going through the focal lengths from 70-200. Maybe I was wrong?

Now I'm ebarrassed. Th new one feels the same as the old one. There is resistance in moving further up the focal length. Two lenses are doing the same thing, i guess its normal. It is smooth, not jerky but you do feel the resistance. Thanks for all your advice ladies and gentlemen.
