I never hesitate getting a refurbished lens I want. They are always a great deal, IMO.

Used lenses can be a great bargain, and their "grade" or quality is dependable, depending upon the vendor. In the United States, KEH is the largest vendor of used cameras and lenses. They have a very dependable grading system -- I purchased a Pentax 6x7 with 2 lenses and a Pentax 645 and 3 lenses a few years ago and made some wondrous images that I still value very highly. I purchased a Zeiss folding camera on Ebay, and when a test roll showed a couple of problems, I sent it to a repair shop I trust. For relatively low cost it came back in very good condition, and I made some excellent images with it.

If used and refurb are almost the same price, get the refurb!
By the way, the 55-300 is a great lens. You will be happy you have it.

I too buy refurbed lenses, great deal, shoot a ton, and I mean a ton of shots during the warranty period to be sure there is nothing wrong with it, then enjoy.

I'm interested in this lens, nikon af-s nikkor 55-300mm f?4.5-5.6g ed vr zoom lens usa. Money is an issue for a new one. What are the thoughts of buying a used lens or refurbished. They are about the same price.

No question, manufacturer refurbished is the way to go.

Adorama is currently selling the 55-200 for $89.00 with free shipping.

Here's the link if someone is interested:

You will not go wrong either way. These well made lenses last a long time. I bought a Nikon 105 used and it is wonderful.

Either/both. Buy used from sellers that advertise satisfaction guaranteed. Stay away from "sold as is, no returns". However, to opine specifically to your post, price being close, suggest opting for refurbished. Have made purchases both ways. So far, have had good luck with both. 90 day warranty is always a big plus. Good hunting.

If you go used, be sure to check out KEH.com - Their lenses are usually better than described.

I've bought refurbished lenses from Canon with full warranty that had not a blemish or quality problem. Sometimes their price is great but sometimes you can buy the same lens new lens from Amazon cheaper. I think you always take a little risk buying a used lens, camera, etc. off Craig's List or e-Bay and have to look very carefully at the return policy.

I got my refurbished 55-300 from the Nikon store. It came with hood and pouch and 90 day warranty. I also bought used from local store only if they offer 30 day warranty. The one I bought local needed to be returned.

No problem if you buy from a reputable dealer or person.

On a refurbished lens are there any markings to indicate that it is refurbished. Is there an indication that it was done by the original manufacture. I assume if I order from Canon it would have been done by them
I wouldn't trust any one other than the manufactures repair facilities. Even with that I have had two incidents of extremely poor (Gossen light meter and Polaroid SX 70) repairs.

Just bought a factory refurb Nikkor 55-300 VS/VR on ebay for a bit over $200. Had it about a month and am very happy with the performance. Used would be iffy for me.
