The refurbished one should come with a warranty (90 days to a year). As long as you can return it if there are any problems, it's a good idea. Make sure you play with it a bit before the return period ends.
"Re-furbished" is a term that can only be applied to cameras & lenses which were returned in new condition, by purchasers (directly or via distributors) to the manufacturer, for minor adjustments or repair. Re-furbished means technically new, but previously sold, and now, after meeting company specs, being re-sold by manufacturer. Often, a 3-month warranty (or longer) is issued by
manufacturer. Re-seller may offer additional store warranty. Read more here:

I never hesitate getting a refurbished lens I want. They are always a great deal, IMO.
If used and refurb are almost the same price, get the refurb!
By the way, the 55-300 is a great lens. You will be happy you have it.
Welcome to the Hog! Get the refurb as they are often better than new as they have been gone through to correct any problems they may have had when they left the factory.
Every lens I have bought has been used, either from Craigs List or Ebay, and have never had a bad transaction. I now own 9 Canon "L" lenses that I would never have been able to afford otherwise. Several of the lenses I couldn't tell from new and all have served me very well with absolutely no problems for the past couple of years.
I have also bought 2 bodies from Craigs list as well, a 60D and a 5D MkII and both had under 1500 shutter actuations. You just need to be patient and look for the best deals that will fit your budget.
Good Luck & welcome to the Hog!
I bought a refurbished Canon 60D from the Canon Online store, and it came with a refurbished 18-135 lens. Both have a one year warranty. I saved a few hundred on the pair, and I am extremely satisfied with the deal. Refurbished lens are a great way to go!

I never hesitate when it comes to factory refurbished bodies or lenses but I don't buy used unless it's from a trusted source a with no questions asked return policy.
I've been luck with both used and refurb and have saved money. Used lens should be looked at carefully though.
I have three Nikon refurbished that I got through Adorama and they are awesome lenses. Not 1 ounce of trouble from any of the three.
A refurbished product usually comes with a warranty just like a new one does.
My first digital camera I bought new but I had some problems with stuck pixels so I sent it back to the factory. They sent me another one that was marked as refurbished. Of course it was better than the new one that I'd returned.
Since that experience I've generally bought refurbished items when that was a cheaper alternative - if I was going to end up with a refurbished unit in any event, I've reasoned that I may as well get the discount price.
