Thanks all for the advice, ended up with the dumb 60" Samsung and a Samsung Blue Ray player, probably at some point will do something different for Smart TV but for now the DVD player is will have to suffice.
I appreciate everyone's input.
We got the Sharp Aquos (actually 2 of them) and love both. We just have to keep reminding them that we are at least as smart as they are. hehehe
If you just want to watch tv and movies (dvds) either will do a good job. I've got a Panasonic plasma for the upstairs and a Sharp Aquos led for our primary downstairs. I like them both. The Sharp is a "smart" tv, but is rarely used as such. I got it because it had built-in wi-fi that I used for Netflix downloads for a while. The selection is so poor that I usually just rent from Red Box when I want something current. I've also not had real great luck with internet access on this unit. Might be better on the Samsung, but you'll have to get that opinion from someone else. I've had a lot of Samsung gear over the years and not had any complaints except with some of the early analog to digital HD receivers that are all part of the tuner system these days. But for plain viewing pleasure, I think either will do well. If you really want to blow your bank account, check out the new 4K units. :) Good luck.
Good choice, my daughter and son in law purchased an LG and loved it until they saw our Samsung and they went out and replaced their LG. The picture is amazing.

You will never go wrong with Samsung.
A plasma TV will use 3x the amount of electricity compared to the same size as Led or LCD. Picture clarity of LED is also tops. Read the specs. Also my next TV must have sd card connectors to display my pictures and I will look for blue tooth to connect a Dr. Dre headset. Before buying do some simple math it will show the true cost of one v/s the other over a two year period.

I have replaced the lamp in my Sony for the last time as this time it seems that a lamp alone will not fix the problem...
So in looking at the LED TV's, based on quality/price/budget I have boiled it down to Sharp vs Samsung but can't seem to figure out which is the best buy in the $1000 range. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I've got a Sony trinitron in my bedroom that has to be 30 years old. Yeh it's a tube and only 19" but talk about value for your money. I even had it cleaned after our cat upchucked into it one time about ten years ago. still going strong. My wife says we should get a better one for the bedroom. I say Leave it alone or something drastic will happen the day after we replace it. She says I'm "CHEAP" I say I'm FRUGAL
It's time for an 80" Samsung and mount it (the TV) on the ceiling.

We have a Samsung. Seemed great at first, but within the first year, the picture didn't seem as "crisp" and it is now hard to read some of the smaller print on the screen.

Sure... tell me this after I bought the TV! That helps!! :D :D :D
Really I don't think that any of them last forever and a 60" under $1000 seems like a pretty good deal. The last two large screens that we bought were $4000 and $3500 and the Sony needed replacement lamps annually... I think that from reading all the posts here as well as reviews online that Samsung is one of the better manufacturers...
Again thanks everyone for your generous input.
All of my tv's are Samsung, along with my monitor and my cell phones. I have had this monitor for several years and it's still going strong.

You know Blurry, there is a lemon in every bunch. Sometimes these things happen. I hope your new TV give you many hours of good pleasure. Mine was one of the first that came out by Samsung, could be the bugs weren't all worked out at that time.
This may have been mentioned and I missed it but did you see the new 60 inch 3D tv? Amazing.

You can look at the latest models side by side at your nearest Costco. If you buy a TV from Costco you have a 90 day return window and an automatic full two year warranty. We recently purchased two TVs from Costco both Samsung. We have another Samsung and I recommend Samsung without hesitation.
Consumer report has a good rating for Samsung pn60f5500 with free Samsung blue ray player. $1097.00 at B&H Photo. would recommend Samsung sound bar HW-F450 with wireless subwoofer $248.00. make connection w/HDMI cables to sound bar. Sound bar has 280 watts .
