Wild Turkey in the most unusual poses.
I was focused on a small bird that took me totally by surprise. What I saw is for the next post.
A dark shadow came in from the right and landed on a stump. It was a wild male Turkey. The bird was the right distance for a static shot but I knew he was going to fly and for that I was over glassed. I had chosen a cropped camera with a 400MM lens. Great for the little ones, not so good for this large guy.
Turkeys fly very well and they're fast. I only got portions of the Tom as he was airborne. It was a nice break in a long but rewarding photo op.

Beautiful iridescence ! Sharp and gorgeous.
What a surprise for you....great captures and a memory forever....H
I really really love the 4th shot!!!
You did a great job matching that lens with the actions of the turkey.
Wow, nice captures!! Love that last one especially.
I've been watching this set of 3 around my house (they have been roosting in the trees for the past 3-4 days?) and they are just the funniest things!
How can you distinguish between a male and a female? I can't seem to determine what gender this one is:

Wonderful shots, Joe.

Surprises are the best! And I'm impressed that he landed so close to you. I think they pretty much have an avoidance issue with people. I never knew how colorful he is and that iridescent gold/copper color in his body feathers is striking. rewarding, productive day. stay warm.stay healthy.

These are fantastic! She's gorgeous and you captured her beautifully. The white snow in the photos really adds to her impact. Well done.
Pug, yours is definitely a male. The females don't have wattles like that. Also, males have spurs on their lower legs and a beard coming out of their chest.
He's a beauty,Nice shots.
