Please help. I was looking at both the Hairy and Downy woodpecker, and couldn't see the difference. What do you think? I was guessing that it's a Hairy Woodpecker.

I'd say it's a Downy simply by the beak size. The Hairy generally have longer beaks.
Also, The head shape on a downy is rounder than that of a Hairy... and this one seems to have a round-ish head

Thank you. My 10 yr old son also said it looked like a Downy, and I hate it when he's right. Thank you, AP :)

In pic. #3, the beak is small, and it also shows one black spot in the tail, it's a Downy.

:-D

The beak of a hairy would be much longer and there would be no black tail spots.

Rocky, nice shots. Are you shooting through the window or are you outside?

A Hairy Woodpecker is about 25% larger and has a longer beak. Yes they are difficult to tell apart.

The Hairy woodpecker is about twice the size of the little Downey. I have bothe of those and the red bellied, the golden flicker and red head all come to my feeders. The Pilated stays in the woods and does a fly over occasionally

I'm jealous. :) I love the little guys, wish spring was here. Hopefully, the others will stop by.
