Canon MKIII

This might be the wrong forum for this discussion but I'm going to buy a second camera. I've been holding off until Canon released the 5dMKIII. I have a 5dMKII. The question: since I only do stills and not video, is it worth the extra 1,000?
Probably should wait until the test results come out.

Hi Jer,
I've always felt it's best to have two identical cameras, so there is no learning curve, or preference toward one or the other.
Once I have 2 twins, I may go shopping for something new and different and exciting.

IMAO The time to buy a new camera is when you have pushed the limits of the camera that you have or when you need a back-up camera (such as a wedding photographer) or if you do events and need to quickly change focal lengths (so you carry two cameras with different lenses).

That being said I'm embarrassed to say I own (4) Canons--10D converted to infrared, 5D, 5D MII, 7D, a Sony NEX5 plus three point and shoots.

I'm also going to buy a NEX7 and am thinking about a 1Dx.

Time to sell the 5D, 5D MII and NEX5

BTW...I have justifications for all my cameras....at least to my wife

I have skimmed over the reviews yesterday and I would have to say stick with what you have.
i also have the Mark 11 and love it. The 111 did not offer that much of a way in improvement to merit upgrading.
At least not to me!

I agree with everyone so far. I've always had two identical cameras. The Mark II is a great camera and I don't see enough improvements for a still photographer to change. I do like the two stop improvement in the ISO but I haven't seen the test results in this feature. The improved focus speed is great but I want to see it in practice. The photo quality is said to be better but, once again, I need to see the test results. These are nice upgrades but I don't know if they are significant enough to warrant 1500 dollar price increase if the 5dmii drops to 1999 or even stays at 2400. I love my 5dmii. I really don't care about 64 focus points and the video in the mkiii.
Anymore thoughts?

I have a 5DmkIII and I must say I love it and as I shoot tons of indoor sports the ISO and super AF are huge benefits. You can get it for under $3K fairly easy. However my reference is I wanted a full frame and came up from a Rebel T1i. I am not sure I would have been looking if I already had a mmii

I carry 2 50D's, and after a lot of research, I have decided that when I am ready to go for the next upgrade of bodies it will be the 5D mk iii.
The biggest reason is what a Canon rep told me. He said that so many pixels are being crammed onto the crop sensors that there is more opportunity for corruption or bleeding to adjacent pixels.
So the logical step is to go to a bigger sensor.

These two camera are similar in name only. The MkII was great for stills and video. The MkIII shares an AF system with the 1Dx, 2nd to none. You will have difficulty finding a better performer. The question is really "What do you want to do with this camera that you can not do with what you now have?" BTW, the MkIII was released about two years ago and impressed the critics. There are a lot of them around, a few belong here.

The MKIII is an outstanding camera and the focusing is much better than the MKII. The rest of the features are only slightly better.

Google DXO for the sensor comparison and DPReview for overall comparison.

However, if you can afford it, why not. You'll forget about the $1K in no time at all.
