Hovenweep is a small park established to preserve the Anasazi ruins that feature a series of towers and small pueblos. Constructed during the Anasazi abandonment of the 4-corners region, a 30-year drought had led to increased conflict over scarce resources. The towers were built to protect a couple of springs on which the occupants were dependent. I have been told that when one of the towers was excavated, 20 people were found burned inside, mostly women and children. For me it's always been a place that had a sad ending.
Thanks! It reminds me of where I need to be.
The story of the Anasazi and their Sinagua relatives fascinates me. I spent a week in Sedona in 2012 and, besides taking almost 2000 pictures, visited every major ruin I could find/get to.
Thanks for the pictures and the history.
Good pictures and interesting background, waykee7!
