Peter Lik. All criticizing aside, which is often mistaken for jealousy, the guys is a bad@$!. If you've never seen the work in person ( fifteen or so galleries around the world) make a point of it as it will change you and leave you with a sense of visual epiphany. I have never, never felt that way about looking at any other landscape photography in person.

Not sure if he is alive but David Muench (Arizona Highways Magazine) He is the one who really got me interested in photography. His son and I think grandson does work for AH last time I looked.

Leonard Lee Rue III. He is one of the most prolific wildlife photographers on the globe and inspired me in my youth by responding to a letter I once wrote him in the seventies.

James Nachtwey. How anyone can portray so much power and emotion is truely remarkable. Wish I could spend a day or two with him to learn.

I met Leonar Lee Rue at one of his seminars. He not only is a great wildlife photographer, but a conservationist too.
He's got my vote.

How much sense does this question make? I mean, it's hard to choose a favourite DEAD photographer: so many were so good in so many ways. And so many living ones are likewise so good in so many ways. How do you compare Sebastiao Salgado with Wang Qinsong?

Go to Arles (cf http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/arles%202010.html ) and you will see the work of innumerable great photographers, living and dead. How much sense does it make to try to select a 'best' out of these?

Cheers,

R.

I'll have to nominate Clyde Butcher here in Florida... His works (B/W) are outstanding ranks right up there with the best in the field............
Go to: http://www.clydebutcher.com/

I must agree that Clyde is right up there at the top. I am excited to be attending one of his darkroom sessions in March and hopefully learn a lot from that class.
