Does anyone out there have experiences to share about underwater photography using a Nikon 300?

It does a very nice job, but the underwater housing for that camera will cost about triple the cameras value.

You may want to take a look at the GoPro website.

Never heard of a C30 Nikon, they make a Coolpix S30, but its not waterproof. The Nikon AW100 and AW110 both work quite well under water as well as in harsh environments.

I got an underwater housing for a camcorder years ago, and I was sorry I did. It worked fine, and I got nice video, but it was expensive, and I used it only a couple of times. Camcorders change so rapidly that it wouldn't fit newer models, so selling it was not an option.

Unless you're going to do loads of underwater shooting, a dedicated underwater camera is the way to go.

I'm interested in one of these Hero's for underwater photography but there's no LCD for viewing the image or framing your shot and no view finder either so I'm a little confused on how to use it. I guess you just point it in the general direction of the fish and shoot? Then pray that you got the shot when you swim back to the boat and either go home or if you bring your laptop or tablet, upload?

There is an accessory LCD available, but I'm not sure if it's good for underwater.

The Hero3 Black edition comes with the LCD viewer and a waterproof case for all so you can actually see what you are shooting. Unfortunately it still has only a fixed wide angle lens and limited battery life.

Consider a Nikonos, (35mm underwater camera). They are very inexpensive, of high quality, and have many accessories available, including lenses. Film may be the way to go if you are considering limited use. Check out KEH.com.
