My pc runs vista and my laptop run windows 7 , my issue is this , do I buy light room 5 and just use on the laptop , which would be a pain in the perverbial due to the size of the screen , or do I settle for lightroom 4 which would work on both ? I can't afford to buy a new pc and lightroom ! Is lightroom 5 that much better than lightroom 4 ? Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Hi Lee, do you have the installation disc for Windows 7, if so use that to install W7 on your PC, otherwise you could buy an installation disc for about £50 from Amazon.

Windows Vista is a program full of flaws. Windows 7 is much better. It would be best if you install Windows 7 in your PC. It would be an improvement in your general PC function in addition to allow your using Lightroom 5. The 5 version has some significant improvements over LR 4,

Addition: Windows 7 as a download is available in Amazon for $63. I guess that would be 40 Euros in UK

The mods made in LR5 are not huge, Radial filter and auto straightening are the two main "improvements". LR4 is very capable and in my opinion a worth while piece of software.

Correction to my previous post:
Searcher's preceding post is right that LR4 is a good piece of software, and probably highly satisfactory for most users. Considering the labor and cost involved in installing Windows7, your best choice would be to to buy LR4 and use it in both the laptop and the PC.

Your laptop probably has a connection for an external monitor!! Hook that up and do your editing on that screen instead of the built in screen!! You can either set it up to use as the only screen or as a "dual screen" setup!!
Your local tech can easily help you set that up!!

You sir are the proverbial exception that proves the rule......Vista is a very poor operating system. Obviously you haven't had many issues with it so you have been lucky. The rest of the world however has not and has had to deal with a plethora of problems!

My suggestion is to upgrade the desktop to Win 7 or 8 and go with LR5. My primary motivation on that comment is that I am unsure if new cameras are added to LR4 as they are added to LR5. If this isn't a concern, consider sticking with LR4. For a while I was using LR3 and LR4 on separate computers. It worked OK, but I could only go from LR3 to LR4 with edits. Going from LR4 to LR3 didn't work as well. It might be a different situation in LR4/LR5.

Wahawk has made a good suggestion, simply plug your PC monitor into your laptop. Just take the VGA lead out of your PC and plug it into your laptop. The VGA leads usually have blue ends with two screws to hold them in place and the inputs are also blue/grey with 15 holes but often don't threaded holes, so make sure the plug is pushed right in.
You should now see what's on the lap top appear on the monitor, on your lap keyboard look for a key in the top row which has a TV symbol on it, press the key and select which option you need.

I've been using LR4 on my Vista machine for over a year with no problems. Had LR3 before that.
I bought a new desktop with Windows 8, I find it is too unstable for anything serious. It is better now and only crashes a few times a week, before it crashed every day, some times twice a day. Also it is not mouse friendly as it was designed for touch screen use. I cannot trust it to handle my important photos or editing.
I looked at LR5 and decided those two major improvements weren't worth the cost of upgrading at this time.
Anyway, that's my experience and 2 cents worth.

Wahawk has a good answer to your viewing situation. You don't really need a tech to set it up, it's quite easy.
I never had a problem with Vista ever.

Have had Vista for 5 years and can't understand why folks have such a hard time using it---never a problem in 5 years. As best as I can understand Vista will only be supported another year and a half while Windows 7 is good for 7-8 more years. Hopefully I will never have to go to Windows 8 since I sent a $1900 computer back to Dell because they would not take Windows 8 off of it!! I had a Dell tech at my house and he couldn't get it to work---that was good enough to say goodbye to Dell. I'll wait until Vista runs out and then install 7. If I had an i-pad or something with touch screen I might consider it but not on a laptop..........
