I wouldn't know where to begin regarding how well it works. For my needs, I couldn't be more satisfied. I've lugged around heavy equipment most of my life and this is a welcomed relief with wonderful results.

A well known reviewer on the internet says:
"First off: I’ve had a lot of people asking if the Leica version is any different to the Panasonic version. Physically, they are identical but for the cosmetics – the Leica has a nicer, cleaner (but also slipperier) design and square buttons. The Panasonic has a few more curves, flourishes, chrome bits and a small but welcome front grip. Menu cosmetics are different. Both have identical sensors, lenses, EVF capability, and as far as I can tell, file output."

Someone enamored of the Leica name would likely have the same sensibility as to be enamored of the Rolls Royce name, notwithstanding the fact that Bentley was always superior to Rolls Royce to say nothing of the miserable reliability record of Rolls Royce as contrasted, for example, with Mercedes.

I guess, everyone is entittled, to their opinion. why would a very fine camera manufacturer like Leica, with their world renouned reputation,, allow their name to be put on a panasonic camera, if their werent any differences between the two, it just does not make any sense, and from what I"ve been told from people in the know, not internet heresay, that their are suttle differences

There are differences in the way their software processes jpgs, but everything else, aside from their external appearance, is the same. As far as the wonderfulness of Leicas, I had the opportunity to shoot candid street in NYC with a Leica Monochrome fitted with the 35mm f1.4 Summilux lens, a $12,000 package. No autofocus, no zoom, small and crappy LCD. I gladly returned it the next day and reached for my Nikon D800. That is not to say that it didn't take a fantastic black and white picture when you were lucky enough to get the shot. But having to rely on pre-focusing and using a small enough f stop so that your subject's face would be reasonably sharp and not being able to compose in the viewfinder were all deal breakers. There is technical quality and then there is ease of use.

While the Leica D-Lux6 and its Panasonic counterpart have identical specs, I have read somewhere that, in the opinion of someone with an inside knowledge of the Leica operation, the standard set by Leica for the lens that goes into the D-Lux6 is far more stringent that Panasonic. Leica will routinely reject lenses that fall short of the quality that they demand, so I would imagine the Leica is the preferred choice over its Panasonic counterpart, notwithstanding the higher price. To me, the lens is everything!

Another point about any Leica camera over its counterpart is that despite the higher price to purchase the camera, the resale value of the Leica will be far better than its counterpart. Besides, jokingly, that red dot gives one a certain amount of bragging rights, everything else being equal!
