In a roundabout segway, many of the folks here seem to know bout firearm. Those who know about Ruger guns are probably knowledgeable of Ruger's legendary service department. WE GET TERRIBLY SPOILED!!!!!!!!!!!!

So when my 6 yr old Rebel went south on me, I decided to send it to canon in VA. I sent it last monday, it arrived last friday, yesterday it was shipped back and it had a deformed circuit board.
supposedly fed ex will bring it right to home.

I will brag about Canon service department right along with Ruger service. Good products, good service.

I had a similar experience this past May with their service on a 7D that was having focus issues. It was slightly out of warranty and they fixed me up promptly at no charge.

Several years ago we had a P&S, out of warranty with a failed sensor. The sensor was under recall according to their website.

Canon paid shipping both ways and replaced the sensor, buffed the case and replaced a scratched LCD screen. Door to door time as I recall was around two weeks.

Best part was they did it at no charge and all contacts with Canon were cheerful.

We now have seven Canon cameras, one Canon printer and one mistake that is not a Canon!

We no longer make mistakes (when purchasing) - we only purchase Canon products.

The camera they repaired still functions faultlessly and is in the glove box of our car for emergency photos.

Well my experience with Canon wasn't as good as those above. As a sch. media specialist I sent a P&S back to Canon because the lens got stuck wouldn't retract. Under warranty it was fixed; 2 months later the same problem, same camera, but out of warranty. They refused to fix it. This was in the New York repair center.

Understandable from the manufacturers point of view.

Not a lot of profit in a P&S, was repaired once under warranty and now out of warranty and broken again. How many times should they repair it; forever?

Chunk it and go buy another Canon - they always improve dramatically between models!

Two months after warranty repair the camera shouldn't have the same problem. As a comparison, Olympus guarantees a repair for 6 months.

Which New York repair center? There are only three Canon factory service centers in the US, in New Jersey, Virginia and California. See addresses below. If you sent it to someplace in New York, its likely you used some third party service Canon licensed to do work warranty work. Perhaps if you had sent it or taken it to the Canon factory service center in Jameburg NJ your experience might have been different.

After having a bad time with the other big named camera service I switched to Canon, with some of the best glass and a larger selection and great service. I am happy camper

I am lucky because I now live close to the Irvine Canon service center and I have heard nothing but good things about it. Previously, I lived in another state and I had a Canon 28-135 lens that was too loose in the zooming, so I took it to local camera store and they shipped it to Canon and I got it back at no time, fixed for very low price. I was impressed.

Convenience is terrific a thing. I'm 25 minutes from Canon's Jamesburg, NJ regional service facility. I'm also 1 hour 45 minutes from both the Sigma and Tamron US headquarters and service centers on Long Island. A bit of a hike true, but Sigma, and perhaps Tamron as well, will fix problems while you wait and ...my bother lives only a few miles away from both. Sigma is located only 10 miles from Tamron. I'm spoiled.

I had a shutter assembly go out after only 18,000 actuations. The 7D is rated for 150,000 actuations. My camera was out of warranty and Canon refused to fix it for free. They were very prompt with the service however.

Here in California we use a Canon repair facility in Orange County. My opinion from personal experience using this service: professional, efficient, and short turnaround. Your gear gets fixed.

Note that you have to go online to register your gear with Canon. Then the work order process will begin.

I don't recall Nikon even having a repair service. Seems they don't need it. Kind of like the Maytag repairman.

Sorry I couldn't resist.
