I am trying out my promaster strobes that have been sitting in my basement for a year. I am getting a shadow all the way across the picture either on the side or bottom. Does any one know what is causing this?
I am not familiar with strobes at all.
any help is appreciated.
thank you

Sounds like your shutter synch is too fast for the flash unit and is already closing before the flash fires.

 ...or if you are using a lesser quality radio transmitter.
I have some cheapies that won't sync shorter than 1/160.

yes I think this is the problem. how do I fix this. I was just using the sync cord.
How do I know what it should be set on?

Check the flash synch speed of your camera, they vary widely. Do not exceed that shutter synch speed and uou should be fine with it.

Drop the shutter setting down until it disappears.
Should be listed in the manual or on the 'net.
A lot of them these days are 1/250 or 1/200 max.

We all learn sometime.
This site might explain what happens with a focal-plane shutter:

Why don't you post one of the images so we can see what's wrong. Like everyone else here I think they are on the right track with sync speed. What camera make and model are you using?
