Here it is, Steve. There were three taken in sequence, but I think this is the one I used.

Except for the sliver of branch across its face you did well to position yourself. Great catch!

This might be the best Iguana shot I have seen. I have one good one, but it was taken at a wildlife exhibition at the State Fair, not from a distance. I like the lighting here because you got wonderful shadows that emphasize the Iguana's texture and the colors are fully saturated. His colors also look very good against this background which does not distract at all from the Iguana. Great focus on the eye, too. Grade A!!!

Thank you, Heirloom Tomato.

I love this guy. You captured him well. Sharp focus and I also like the shadows of his fringe/mane down over his body leading your eye back to his front leg and then back up to his eye.

I think he needs just a little more saturation in color.. just a tad. It would bring "him" out more..

I think the shot as cropped and printed is very good and you should be proud of it. That being said, let me point out two things. First, the focus appears to be on the elbow, not the head. My experience is that with opportunities like this, you do not have time to think, focus and compose. Get the shot and say your what if's later.

I prefer more separation between subject and background. I would mask him so I could darken the background. Once you do that, you might want to change animal's brightness.

Thanks for printing this pretty picture.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. You are right...I was happy to end up with this shot...focused elbow or not. I did both: darkened the background and upped the brightness of the subject....apparently not enough. Will try adjusting more. I might also try going the other direction....lightening the background. Could be interesting. I was just looking at the hyena photographs by Pieter Hugo. Totally different subject matter, of course, and sometimes I wonder about wether it was the right effect...but I really do like those pictures.

For me, this is strictly a stylistic matter. The subject has such wonderful color, sharpness and details that I would it to stand out. Darkening the background slightly will cause it to pop. It may get lost against a lighter background.

I would suggest that you try both ways and decide which you prefer.

WOW, Charryl, the crop is just right, the angle of light with the sun showing on the skin under his chin, and the way the sunlight lights just half his eye, and the shadow of the spines on his back, all perfect in my opinion. Suggestions for improvement, very few, frankly, maybe a little touch of sharpening on the head, and like you already mentioned, maybe a little darkening of the branch behind his head. Great handheld shot.
