If you were to upgrade...go for cs6...adobe is at least supporting that version for a little bit longer.
Personally I spend 90% of my time in LR doing minimal editing, and maybe 10% in photoshop CC when I need to do HDR work or some major cloning. LR is so much easier to learn and understand than photoshop, and I'm a graphic designer who uses it on a weekly basis.
Buy LR5, learn it (heck there's a 30 day trial), and use PSE10 when you need to do other work.

OK. Thanks

I have been using Photoshop Elements 7.0 for ages, and have Elements 10 but don't use it, mainly because 7 is familiar to me, (and also because I hate the overlay of thirds that i never figured out how to delete in 10).
I do minimal post processing, not very interested in doing pp acrobatics with my photos. After looking at some videos of CS5 and 6, am thinking it might be time for me to upgrade.
If I do, which Photoshop is best?

Here is the deal - get Adobe CC at the $9.99/mo price. It is charged by month but you are on the hook for a year. You get LR, Photoshop,(Adobe Camera Raw) and other apps including fonts.

These applications will dramatically improve your images and improve your overall photography. You enjoyment will jump 10 fold. I have been teaching Photoshop for 14 years at the college level.

Enjoy

OK. I suppose I should have asked about whether there are qualitative differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements programs.

Qualitative? No, I don't think so. Both are highly-spoken of, Adobe products.
Quantitative? Yes, most certainly. As in things you can do with PS that cannot be done with PSE.

However, from your message, I gather you don't even use the full capabilities of PSE10 - I'm with the others that say: "Learn what you already have before spending the money on a new program." If you think PSE has its difficulties learning, PS does even more so. For the price difference you could buy yourself a nice new lens.... even after you upgrade to PSE12.

CS6 has some very nice features. I teach people how to do 90% of the necessary photo editing in 20 minutes. PLENTY of online tutorials to bring you up to speed. Learning Adobe Products is like eating a whole elephant, you do it ONE BITE at a time.

And remember to take advantage of the 30 day free trial. Elements products stink on ice as far as I am concerned. STUPID Adobe does not have enough sense to create a common user interface for their product line OR maintain proper security on the online subscription service!

Photoshop CC is the best, but since you're inquiring about CS5 and CS6, CS6 is definitely superior.

I hear you can get Photoshop CC for $10/month.

Try it.

I use only about 2% of it, and when you know which 2% you want, it's fast and easy.

Photoshop Elements was a good idea gone bad, IMO.

As far as I'm concerned Lightroom is a disaster--I know others don't agree, but that's what I think.

Photoshop CC it is...for me!

dont they still have the photoshop cc and LR for $10 a month deal?

Yep… just got it last week to replace my PS CS6. It has some very nice new features and some I'lll never use. I have been using Photoshop as a professional graphic designer since it came out… it changed my life, and my income (!!!!) for the better… and I probably only use 50% of it's capabilities. Worth every penny.

The special offer ended 12/31/13. They seemed anxious to sell as many as possible. Call Adobe and see what kind of a deal you can get.

Learn the software program you have or at the very most upgrade to PSE12. The ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) that comes with PSE12 is probably worth the upgrade alone. Learn one program at a time. Like someone else already said hear, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. Even PSE is an elephant. The CS series of Adobes software is 100 whales compared to PSEs 1 elephant. LOL

The current $9.99/month deal for LightRoom and PSCC requires that you already own CS3 or higher. It runs until February 28th.

And to the OP, I concur that I do 95+% of my work in LightRoom, and only use Photoshop for stuff I can't do in LR directly.

You might give a good long look at Lightroom 5. This is excellent but does not have layers and the classical masks.

LR5 is available as a stand alone purchase that does not require you to subscribe to the "Creative Cloud".

Learn to use PSE 10.It is easy and you will love it. Save that money you are willing to spend with no clear advantage.

Stick with PS7, if as you say you do minimal PP, then why upgrade, one thing that they have dropped from PS7 is the extract filter, why I know not but for me it is a problem, so eventhough I use CC for most things, I still retain the earlier version just for that one filter. Save your money.
