In general the mining and smelting in the USA has been on a down hill slide for 50 yrs. Maybe longer in some areas - Gold & Iron -
The largest Lead and Zinc mine in the USA - Bunker Hill - Burk, ID closed in '81 - and the largest lead & Zinc smelter in the USA in Kellogg, ID closed right afterwards. The Smelter was one of the largest EPA cleanups in history.
http://wikimapia.org/5448833/Bunker-Hill-Smelter-EPA-superfund-siteOne can not imagine the damage this smelter did to the lives of the people living in that canyon where that polluted air was trapped by inversion and it's own polluting particles.
I lived the from age 14 to 18 as my father worked in the Silver, Lead and Zinc mines of the area. My brother stayed there working in a grocery store till he die at 62 in '97 from infazimma- was it his smoking - the smelter or both I don't know.
My opinion is if the government can spend mega $ to save the auto industry, farm supplements and such they could spend some helping these companies stay open with epa help rather than closure. Keep our people working also.
