Here is a recent picture at Christmas...It was taken in RAW, has been converted to a JPG with NO PP!...

As others have said your exposure is off.

If you're not familiar with PP I suggest Windows Picture Gallery (assuming you run Windows). Its free and will give you all the PP you will need and it also has a auto adjust so you don't need any skill at all. It does jpg not raw. Yes you can do better with skillful PP but until you learn this will be more than adequate.

Here is your image with the auto adjust processing.

I know that this is all operator error but it is becoming irritating to the point that the joy of taking pictures is not what it once was. I use a Canon 5Dii with a few different lenses in my bag, changing lenses doesn't seem to help. I try to utilize the M mode most of the time, and usually shot RAW. My pictures always come out what I would call flat. I have a friend that uses a Nikon camera, always uses the full automatic mode with a popup flash. Her pictures always POP with great contrast, good exposures, and terrific colors. From time to time I will switch to full auto but still my pictures do not POP like hers. I tend to spend more time doing post processing then I do out taking pictures.....The Joy is becoming more of a chore! Makes me wonder.....is there that much difference between camera brands.....or that much difference in photographers and those that utilize the M mode -vs- those that shoot fully automatic....Thanks for listening! I think the winter blahs have set in!

Hi Tobster,

I shoot with the Canon 6D and sometimes I had noticed the same thing. NOT being a jerk about this but I did pick up phone and called CANON because I don't and didn't know everything about my camera, I would do that. Call Canon. There might be a setting in camera that is causing you to have flat images. The difference between a dull photo and a Bright colorful contrast looking PHOTO is only a call away ........ lol.......

What a neat effect photoshopmikey, I was expecting just a regular frame, Not a huge museum piece in your studio!
Love it!

I did a simple curves adjustment in PS, cropped, and put it into a frame. it is is a little dark, but if i try to lighten it the highlights blow out. I would love to have your gear.
Keep shooting, mikey

It will be more than a phone call. The first thing they would need is a raw file. Without seeing a picture and looking at the EXIF settings they can only guess. Then what was the available light and/or was a flash used, what was the flash settings. Could you provide all that data over the phone?

A couple things. RAW files DO come out "flat" because they are not processed by the camera. They allow more flexibility for you to do your own processing the way you want to - but the key words are DO YOUR OWN PROCESSING which requires post editing work. Secondly, if your friend is working with full auto she is likely also shooting in Highest Quality JPG which does the processing in-camera for her.

She may have also read the camera's operation manual carefully and found out that when shooting in JPG she can set the camera to boost colors, increase sharpness, use "programs" that are optimized for certain situations, etc. and has done so. Because you are shooting in RAW you are bypassing all those settings to get more ability to do your own later - but the disadvantage is that you must do your own later.

Some people want and need that flexibility and shoot RAW to have it. If you don't, compare notes with your friend and see what she's doing different than you are. I'm sure it's not the camera's fault.

Also if you don't fully understand the camera so you can shoot in "M"anual as an advantage instead of a hindrance, and she is using the artificial intelligence of her camera body to make all the decisions for her - her camera is quite smart and is likely making better decisions than you are.
