Just hanging in there.
So this is my first real attempt at a monochrome street shot and I am the first to admit that Graham's work has been a bit of an inspiration. I know I have a huge amount to learn I am kinda groping around in the dark so any and all C@C is welcome, and feel free to edit. This was taken in Vancouver. I don't know what this guy was on but he was totally out of it, he just sort of hung there with his fag hanging down. But he could play. I don't normally like accordion music but this guy was great. But he was totally wasted, I don't know how he managed it.

Superb capture, you have caught the "moment". It's a bit flat and needs more contrast applied selectively to the main elements.
Graham
Excellent...wouldn't know it was your first try. Like the dodging connection you made between the musician and his dog.
I actually thought I had mistakenly opened one of Grahams threds intil I looked at your avatar. I like the the dodging and burning you did overall on this.
Fantastic job Peter.

Thanks Graham, I knew it wasn't quite there yet but couldn't quite put my finger on why. I will work on it later this evening and repost.

Thanks I appreciate your response but it needs a lot more work yet.

Please post any future edits you do on this so we can follow along. You have done an excellent job of capturing this young mans condition. I wish the quality of the music could be felt through the picture.
I think the composition is ok, I would like to see a little more room around him top and left.

Could you elaborate on why you think it is excellent?

Could you tell us a little more about why you think it is excellent?
Following Grahams suggestion I have tried to increase the contrast particularly around the legs and the dog. It certainly feels closer to what I was after. All C@C most welcome.

I think this is a terrific picture. No distracting elements but just enough background to give interest and context. I like the grimy look of the accordionist that matches that of the background. Love his looking down and eyes covered by unkempt hair. Love the way you reworked the dog and accordion. Curious of how this looks in color.
Not only did you learn something surprising about photography here but also how interesting uninteresting things like accordion music can be. Keep up the good work.
