And now as we are discussing this, Nikon is launching the pro line D4s, which is a minor upgrade of the D4, but may soon help you get a older D4 model at more affordable price.

And Nikon is now also launching the D3300 which is a minor upgrade from the D3200 in the consumer line.

I would have thought the D3200/3300 was a beginner line?? :?:

The D3x00, D5x00, and D7x00 are all consumer series, at different levels. Whether you want to call it "beginner" is probably semantics. Though Nikon would probably consider it more a DSLR entry level, to get people into the Nikon DSLR world.

Guess I was relating to MTs earlier post where he called the 4digit s the beginners series and the 3digit(I think it was) the consumer series.... :: ::

But I don't think anyone can consider the D7100 entry level. It is after all, the top dog (at the moment) in Nikon's DX lineup, is weather sealed and offers the same focusing system in Nikon's 2nd to the top FX camera, the D800 and just about all the controls of the higher line systems as well.

Yes, when I said "it", I should have said "the D3x00 line"

I have a different interpretation of the Nikon models than what MT said.

Less is more. The more expensive the camera, the fewer digits in the model number.

A pet peeve of mine- Less is never more!! It very well sometimes may be better but less is not more. ie. I will give you less and you will pay me more. Black is not white, long is not short, hot is not cold. One more time. Less is not more.

He needs to fix that, the D7000 is 16mp, the D7100 is 24mp.

No relationship at all, the D40 to the D4. The D40 is an entry-level “DX format” 6 MP DSLR, introduced in 2006, whereas the D4 is a “professional” full-frame 16 MP DSLR. The D4 costs about ten times as much as the D40.

The D3xxx as well as the D5xxx models ARE entry-level cameras designed for the beginner or for someone doesn’t need a camera built like a tank but wants all the bells and whistles, too.

Thank You very much.
Is there a way of identifying a introduction time thru Model #'s?

You would have to look up each model, separately, to find out when each was introduced. I don’t believe that Nikon’s website identifies that for each.

So D90 is better than D300 and D300 is better than D7100?
