when I did street photography i was living 20 minutes from atlanta. a big city will give you more interesting quirky people. I tended to shoot with a 50 mm or a small zoom so that people wouldnt notice and continue to do whatever it was that i found so interesting in the first place. It also helped that i had at the time a very photogenic fiance who was always looking for places for me to shoot her and would make suggestions about what else i should shoot besides her.!! When we broke up i really havent done any street candids since.

Has anyone here read anything about the newly discovered street photographer Vivian Maier? She has since died but a guy bought boxes of her unknown work from a storage place and is trying to bring them to the publics attention. Google her name. Her work is incredible, and her life an interesting read.

i have and her stuff is fantastic! it is tragic she wasnt discovered untill her death and she died broke. the guy bought a storage unit at auction full of photos negattives annd like 600 rolls of exposed but undeveloped film. most of her work is from the laate 40's thru the 70's and were shot in chicago were she lived. some of her work is on display by the city of chicago, and the guy who bought her stuff has a web site and is working on a book about her. Great street candids. a must see if you like candid photography. 8-)

I do street photography when I visit NYC and when I travel to foreign lands, too boring where I live in South Central Pa except for the freakish people one can sometimes see coming out of Walmart. It's easier in NY because of the crowds. I don't want to get into an altercation here. I use a 70-200 because I don't have the nerve to get into strangers' faces.

I know that all the gurus of street photography say that that's a no no, that you should make the person's acquaintance, talk to them, ask permission, but if I had to do that I wouldn't have any pictures. It just doesn't fit my personality.

when i photographed the homeless in Dallas for a book on the subject i always walked around with just the camera and a small stack of $1 dollar bills and i would talk to the people i shot and sometimes they would tell me , " dont take my picture" and i respected that but it was because of the fact they were homeless and there are many different aspects of that endenvor that i had to respect. For one you never get past that safe zone of a couple of feet and you always feel out the person first - the homeless can be a dangerous group so you have to use caution- as far as just shooting from a distance ,it sounds like fun to me as well -

I was truly inspired by her work, what a pitty it took so long to bring them to the publics eye. There is talk of making her story into a movie also. I'll definately go to that movie.

I wish I had some Mardi Gras street pictures to share, but I don't. Maybe this next year.

I just have to remember not to start drinking at 7am on Mardi Gras morning. So I can get the shots and not lose the camera.

I will look her up. A great deal of my photography is street photography. Where ever I travel I am always taking pictures of people on the street. Very often I ask them if it is ok and the response is generally positive.
