Sony slt A65

I just bought this camera. Only 2 months old with 3 lens, a flash and soft light boot, and a close up kit for $700. I am not completely new to photography but this is my first dslr. I looked at a lot of different cameras and compared features to price. This seemed like a good deal. How does sony stand up to the well known camera icons like Nikon and cannon?

The Sony Alpha DSLR/SLT camera owe and can trace their lineage to the Minolta Maxxum/Dynaxx/Alpha line.

Minolta produced some of the finest cameras and lenses in the business.

Sony is NO different. Sony products are as good as those from any other manufacturer and BETTER in many respects than the offerings from the big two.

SERIOUSLY.

BTW, google Gary Friedman and check out his guide for the A65/A77. It is the BEST manual you can buy for your camera. ;)

In particular, the a65 offers burst shooting speeds (useful for wildlife and sports photography) that rival professional-grade cameras costing 2 to 4 times as much, and superior technology for displaying the focus of video capture.

Plus, with image stabilization in the camera body, you have current camera functionality with far more heritage lens, which can mean a real cost savings.

I have the A77 and the A65 and there is little I would change about them. The 65 would have the control knob on the front and rear like the A77 and I would move the movie button on both.
I love both of these camera's though and find both of them excellent for the location of the controls. Use it very little and you won't have to look where you are changing your settings.

I suggest also getting the Friedman Books. The electronic version works for me best. It's on my smart phone and I have it with me always. Be sure you get both of the books. The electronic version is the best deal.

Good luck with your camera, read your manual and take lots of pics. The more you do the better they will be.

Guys, the new A78 will be unveiled soon... no later than early spring.

It will sport a 36 megapixel APS-C sensor with expanded dynamic range and 480 autofocus point!!!

It will also shoot 8-14 frames per second!!

And if you like the current 2.36 million dot OLED electronic view finder, you'll LOVE the new 4 MILLION dot finder on the A78!!!

And since the mirror is gone, low light noise performance will be greatly improved.

I've had my A77 for over a year and am STILL learning it... but fellas, it's time to start saving for the new A78!

That's the second recommendation I've heard for Friedman. I have, and enjoyed, David Busch's book for my A330 (which I'd like to sell for a new lens or flash) but haven't yet gotten a book for the A77, which I bought a few months ago. How does Friedman differ from Busch as far as his explanations, examples, etc.

Like every new thing, there is a learning process to use it well. Sony is producing great stuff and more people are using Sony than you might think. I thought I would upgrade to the A77 but it looks it will be the A78. You need to be proud that you use a Sony and have compassion for those who do not yet use Sony.

I bought the Busch book for my A77 and did not it find it as nearly detailed as the Friedman Book. Friedman goes into detail about the settings and why he uses some of the settings he uses on his camera's. I was disappointed in the Busch book after I read it. Perhaps someone got more out of it than I did, but I thought it was much like the manual only larger print.

^^^I bought the Busch book first and read it cover to cover. Then when Friedman's book was finished I bought it and dove in. REALLY good stuff.

Like lascar said, there is a HUGE difference between the two, ESPECIALLY in the quality of the explanations and reasoning behind using certain functions for certain applications.

Friedman not only tells you what a function is and HOW it works... but WHY you should use it. And even though this guy was literally a Rocket Scientist, he writes everything in a very accessible and understandable way. I'll NEVER buy another Busch book again if Friedman has one available for the same camera. ;)

Check this out:

Sorry for the typos in my previous post. It SHOULD have read Sony A79 and the sensor should have been described as a 32 MP sensor.

I'm getting old....

I have had my A65 for almost 2 years and love it. I would highly recommend David Busch's book, as I feel I have not yet mastered all the features of this fantastic camera, and refer to it often.

If you like Busch's book, you'll LOVE Friedman's.

It's a guide for both the A65 AND the A77:

http://friedmanarchives.com/alpha77/

Again... there is NO comparison between the two with Friedman's book coming out WAYYYYYYY ahead of Busch's.

I've been using an A57 w/ 18/250 Sonysal lens for about a year now. Depending on what and where I swap with the Canon G15. So, gotta really pay attention to where the controls are and practice abit when dragging out the Sony. Love the camera and what it does for me.
