Tough to say without some more information. Studio? Need off camera? How much money do you want to spend? Lot's of variables.

BEST would be the SB-910, also the most expensive. The SB-600 can be had used for reasonable pricing and does a very nice job. The SB-700, 800 and 900 will work quite well also.

I would look into a product by Yongnuo. I know it is a Chinese company, but the flashes and triggers are not the usual Chinese junk. Do a search on youtube, and take a look at how these flashes compare to the Canon, or Nikon branded flashes. You may be surprised at how these compare. I bought two Yongnuo Yn 565EX flashes for my Canon 7D, and matching triggers. The cost of these flashes were about 1/2 the price of the comparable Canon Flash. It seems all the Yongnuo flashes are compatible to both Canon and Nikon cameras. Newer model flashes have built in radio receivers, and eTTL, and high speed sync. Look these flashes up on Flashhavoc.com for reviews, and Eachshot.com for basic pricing. The Yongnuo site is HKyongnuo.com. Flashhavoc also reviews radio triggers, and other branded flashes.

In order of price: SB910, SB700, SB600. There are plenty of 3rd party options that I will not touch on as someone else already has. I myself have bought a few SB600's used from KEH and was happy with them.

I myself has been using a SB700x2/SB600x3 combo for my ultra portable set up when I do not want to bother with heavy 800watt Normans studio heads.

I have D7000, and use the SB 700, and it is all I have needed so far. Smaller than the top of the line SB 910; $200+/- less, 2/3r the size and only one stop of light down. Works on camera, and off camera by cable or remote triggered by the on camera pop up flash.

More than just triggering, you can actually control it and others with the pop-up flash.
I have only used Nikon (and a few Metz) on my cameras and recommend them highly.

MT forgot to mention that out of that list, only 910 and 700 are current production. And the 900 has overheating issues.

I would STRONGLY recommend that you buy a Nikon flash as your first one. THEN as you get proficient, and understand flash lighting, buy third-party units as required.

I have an SB-400 and an SB-600. The SB-400 is more than adequate for most situations I am in. It is discontinued, but can still be found.

The Sb-600 is cool because it will do iTTL and the newest tricks, and will also do basic TTL so it can work on my FA.
But it is large.

Large?
Try a Sunpak 622 for Large.
