Where is the mounting flange ring? It is made of plastic. My D5000 dropped about 3-feet onto a carpeted floor, snapping two of three plastic flanges on my 18-55 kit lens. Nikon repair costs are more than the price of used, same lens in good condition.

Nikonian---You are right, about the plastic mounting ring not in the photo. It attaches to the ring with the seven contact pins. I forgot that I threw that piece away, as it was broken anyway. Also, the lens focusing system was all busted up inside, so like you were saying, more to fix that buy one on E_bay.....Thanks Jim

For those of us that have never seen the inside of a nikon zoom lens, here's a pic to study. My granddaughter had an accident with her D90, and the lens took all the punishment. I found her a new lens, so we field stripped the totaly damaged one just to see how simple it is made? Did I say simple? This lens has the image stabilization in the lens, so it is extemely complicated. Many plastic parts, 38 screws, delicate pieces, electronics that rival a computer
many electrical flat multi wire connections---------I don't really see how they can manufacture this lens for 5 times the cost! Makes you kinda look at in body stabilization in a more favorable light.

Kind of like the camera that took this picture. Olympus Pen EPL1!

The big question is can you put it back together and have no parts left over? :)

There is no way that I could assemble even a new one in less that 10-15 years. It took me several hours just to find all the little screws and do dads just to tear it apart. In fact I had to break some of the surounding plastic pieces to finally get it all apart! Complicated? An understatement..................Jim

I snaped my 27-70mm in two it cost me $120.00 from an authorised Nikon repair shop. Not many used lenses out there at that price range.

Enclosed is a copy of the receipt for the Nikon zoom lens. It was a bargain at $118.00-----Also, I forgot to disasemble the auto-focus sub assembly, so here's a pic of that little jem. The lens was new by the way, the one I ordered.

Excelent, glad you made out well, thats not a bad price plus you got to play with the broken one. I know there are many photographers out there that would love to take one appart. My lens cost over $1800.00 so it was well worth the repair. But when repair is close to new go new. Keep shooting and have fun.
