This is a five part multi-faceted question:

What element of composition did you utilize?

What technical skill/knowledge did you use/employ?

What new PP tool/technique did you learn?

What new "toy" (tool) did you purchase (or make) that took your images to "the next level"?

Best advice received from a Hogger?

At some point, I'll share mine.... just don't want to "muddy the waters".

What element of composition did you utilize?
* I thought more about diagonal lines to the corners

What technical skill/knowledge did you use/employ?
* continuous AF with "focus + release" priority for portraits
* The 2014 answer might be back button focus

What new PP tool/technique did you learn?
* Portrait Professional
* The 2014 answer might be DxO Optics Pro 9, purchased at 11pm New Years Eve. :-)

What new "toy" (tool) did you purchase (or make) that took your images to "the next level"?
* None in 2013. None planned for 2014 either. The toy chest is well stocked. :-)

Best advice received from a Hogger?
* Try DxO Optics Pro 9. It might be the perfect pp tool for me.

Excellent questions. I know I'm forgetting a couple of important answers, but it's good to bring these to the "front of the mind".

I spent a lot of money on photo equipment, and my pictures look sooo much better. :D

Seriously, I'm just read a lot and experiment a lot.

Some good questions, suggesting we all need to keep progressing with the craft of photoraphy.

Learned alot from all the UHH here. One big thing for me was composing the shot not just shooting the shot. Learned how to or how to use my bridge camera to its fullest potential. Still have a long ways to go skill wise. The biggest thing is shoot post ask for critique learn repeat.....

I returned from zooms to primes, and learned to walk to frame again, after a few years of zooms.

I learned to use a DSLR like an SLR in P and S mode to get the shots I wanted.

I got DxO v9 - a big upgrade from v6.

I got my first FX camera - a D610. Big step up from my D90, and I returned a Nikon FA to my stable.

Best advice? Learn to shoot what you have, then ask what you can do better; likely, it won't be gear.

Primes FTW!
Why not A?
I'll let you know what I think about DxO after a few weeks.
Yay for FX, another reason to shoot A--it's all about DoF, especially if you've also got fast primes.
Sure, it won't be about the gear, says the guy swapping an f/1.8 for a f/1.4. :-P

Nice list of lessons.

I meant A and S, and not just using P :)
I'm keeping the 50 1.8 for use on the FA and D90. I just want f1.4. Sometimes, it is about the gear, especially if new gear gets you out to shoot more!

Composition - more aware of lines , horizons, rule of thirds, textures

Technical skill - Shooting more and more in Manual , utilizing more flash skills.

PP/Technique Moved up to LR5 and Elements 11 so a boatload of new ideas.

Toy - D800e, Wacom Intous Pro Medium Tablet

Advice - Listen /Learn from mistakes/ See everything in your viewfinder.

Narrowed my digital camera inventory down to one.... Oly E-PL5

Then shot film 75% of the time. Relapse to better image quality with medium and large format.

I already knew everything else. ;-)

I improved my printing by ditching resin coated paper. I am using fiber based paper for everything now.

"Used to be that every lens and teleconverter combination would work but no more."
"Overexpose by two stops for snow pictures."
"Great shot!"
