I have a Canon EOS D5 Mark III and would like to know how to turn this function (Auto Lighting Optimizer) on.....at the moment, it's off (blanked out) and I'm not sure how to turn it on. Help!

8-) 8-) 8-) That feature may be turned on in one of your menus. Check your instruction manual. My camera is different from yours and ALO is activated in a different menu. GL

Are you in Auto? See page 142 of your manual. Page 202 has a neat trick for you too. Happy New Year!

In my PDF of the manual it's on page 144 and keep in mind that this only works if you are capturing images as jpgs. It will do nothing for a raw image.

This is the correct page in the manual, but my camera's ALO line item is blanked out. Maybe I need a resort to camera defaults button.

Very, very odd. I turned the camera off, replaced the battery, nothing.....same problem. I noticed a number of functions were blanked out. I even engaged the "clear all camera settings" button, but that didn't even work....that is, nothing happened. I then put the A+ (Fully automatic) mode on, then back to Av and, VOILA, all functions were available.?????? Have no idea what went wrong in the first place, nor how or why all was righted by what I did. I also have a query in to the Canon people and expect to hear so,etching tomorrow sometime.

When the camera is in Auto mode many of the menu features are not available. You have to go to one of the other shooting modes to use all the menu features. Removing and replacing the battery is not necessary. Simple selecting one of the other shooting modes like TV, AV or Manual is all that is necessary.

I discovered this while I was shooting in Auto mode with a flash and tried to select a menu item. I haven't mastered the flash yet so I shoot in Auto mode when I use it so as not to ruin any pictures. Since I shoot 90+% candid shots when using my flash there are no second chances.

Thanks. I was aware of the limited availability of functions in the Auto mode as I too have used them, but when I went back to Av mode, the same functions I wanted to use were STILL blanked out! Not even the "clear all settings" worked. Somehow, going back to Auto, then back to Av corrected everything! Will speak to Canon later about this.

What exactly is the Auto Lighting Optimizer? What does it do and what are the benefits of activating this feature?

Basically it attempts to keep your shadows open and your highlights in detail.
