Do You Recognize This Odd Tripod?
I am looking to the great UHH Community for advice. I picked up an odd looking tripod with an unusual ball head and I have already stumped the "experts" at Tempe Camera in AZ. No one there knows what fits this unusual head.
I'd like to pick up a part (from somewhere) that might allow me to use this as a camera mount. Or even a lighting mount. Not sure where to look.
Any one ever see one like this?
Tripod 1
Tripod 2
Tripod 3
Totally clueless, but from pic #1, I'd guess there was a pressure fit stud protruding from the hole that would accommodate camera mounting.
This obviously requires a unique fitting receptical - it is part of a very QUICK release system that I have not seen before - but very ingenious !
I do not know who made them, but they are from the 1980's. Its a quick release system. There was a long handle that mounted to the camera and made it work like a pistol grip, it was hollow and slid down over the 6 point star mount that you see on your head. As I recall they did not become popular because there was no "release" mechanism or lock, and the distance from the ball center to the viewfinder was extreme and would cause a tripod to fall over when used with a longer lens in portrait format.
Been close to 30 years since I have seen one of these. I seem to recall them being made in England if I'm not mistaken about that, not sure anymore.
Or I could be wrong. Good explanation, MT.
Try searching for "vintage tripod" on eBay. It brings up some similar looking results.
Are there any markings on the legs or elsewhere like a part number or manufactures mark?
As am I, unfortunately. Thanks for trying.

No, unfortunately, there are no markings whatsoever. No company name, no logo, no identification. Very solid construction, though.

Thank you for this I appreciate you trying.
England and the 80's. I'll filter my searches by that.
From the answers so far, I think maybe one of our UK friends (an old one, like me) could help.
kinda reminds me of my manfrotto tripod http:/www.manfrotto.com
That kinda looks the HORUSBENNU LX-28T The mount is about the same.. I'm going to purchase a tripod made by Nikon that has a ball mount. I use the RAM mounts on my motorcycle, ball mount and I can get my cam right where I want it...

Had one like that several years ago , cut the star shaped shaft off leaving about a half an inch . Then I drilled an taped it for a quick release mount plate ...worked fairly well... good luck an Happy New Year...

I'm afraid I'm down to that if I can find no other option. Didn't really want to "reinvent the wheel" though, if someone had a better idea.
Thanks for the thoughts.

You'll never guess what I found. Mystery solved, and not in a good way.
I was just brute searching through hundreds of pictures of tripods on Google and came across one that had a six splined protrusion like mine did.
Unfortunately, it is for a COSMETOLOGY DUMMY! For hair dresser school! The shaft fits into a practice dummy head and one learns how to style hairdos on the dad-gum thing!
What a revolting predicament.... mystery solved... I guess.
Thanks for everyone who offered advice. I may just use it with tape and an off-camera flash stand after all.
