Have a look at the Nikon 18-140 F4...on that camera it seems to get great reviews. I'm thinking about swapping out my old 28-105 for that lens...just for events and things like that.

Reviews seem generally quite favorable. I believe the aperture is f3.5-5.6, not constant f4 however.

Asking advice on experiences and merits comparing Nikon's 17-55 f2.8, 24-70 f2.8, and 24-120 f4. For D7100 body, I want this to be my sharpest "people" lens for parties, portraits, grandkids, and the like, not a traveling lens. I know the DX sensor will increase the ranges of all of them but not a real concern for me. Thanks for inputs!

Before answering this question I would have to know if you regularly use a flash to increase the available light on your subject. If you do then I would suggest the most recent version of the 24-120. If not, then probably the 24-70 if it is not too big to be mobile in a party environment. That would have to be your call. Personally, I would, as others have suggested, select a prime lens duo of 50mm and 85mm, each with as wide an aperature as I could afford.

On a full frame, I would agree. The OP is using the D7100, which has a crop factor of 1.5 relative to a FF. This would make the full frame equivalents to the 50mm and 85mm 75 and 97. That might be a little bit much for in-home gatherings. If you want to go with primes, maybe a 35 and a 50 would fit the use better giving an eqivalence of 52.5 and 75. Though I would favor one of the zooms for the uses mentioned.

The 24 to 70 would be great , but the extra distance of the 24-120 may be helpful with grandkids in the yard outdoors. Try both at the camera shop.

in the old newspaper biz, the 24-120 was know, somewhat sarcastically, as the "streetsweeper" lens. not the best nikon effort.
the 24-70 is a much better lens, i would opine.

Something around 17-80ish(85, 90, 100) would seem like a great range for these type of shots. Some wide and moderate tele abilities. Usable with flash when needed. Of course with good wide apertures and extreme sharpness too! Why is it so elusive? Or is it?

The new designed 24 to 140 is a much improved lens, and a bargain compared to the cost of the 24-70 f2.8 with no VR.
