Hardly seems fair ? You pay for the insurance don't you ?....What about the quality of the filters you are using ?....Personally, I don't use filters for "protection" & haven't since about 1972 with no resultant loss of any lenses (maybe a few small scratches, but they have a negligible effect on IQ anyway. As for insurance claims settlement times, true, they are not settled "in an instant", but you simply go get a lens to replace the damaged one & they when the insurance claim settles up, you apply that to the credit card or back into your bank account if you paid by cash... No big hurdle....

you know, i've been thinking about this and personally i'd go with a haze, rather than uv, filter.

B+W, of course makes excellent filters, but so does Hoya and Rolev (if you can find these). all the above used Schott glass (see Zeiss). so no need to worry about the so-called image degradation which many seem obsessed with.

Hoya does not use Schott glass, they manufacture their own glass. Schott glass on the other hand is made by Zeiss.

What if any filters make sense for a digital camera lens. I have read that a UV filter is not necessary because unlike film the sensor itself does not pick up UV. I am considering a Hoya PRO1D protector, for lens protection only. Alternatively I could just try to be very careful with the lens but I see that already in a couple days I managed to get a fingerprint on it. Thoughts?

You can get finger prints on filters also and cleaning a lens is no more difficult than cleaning a filter.

Isn't Hoya the #1 manufacturer of glass?

There are times when a UV filter is very useful to protect an expensive lens - in very dusty conditions or when hiking in rough terrain. At sunset, I remove the UV filter for better results.

Occasionally, I use both graduated and regular ND filters and a circular polarizer. This fall I used an Enhancing filter for fall colors and for a trip to the Grand Canyon. (I think the tip on the Grand Canyon came from MTShooter) I was pleased with the results.
