Congrats. on the Snowy Owl, dzs1945, that's a wonderful catch. :-D
They have been showing up in strange places this year. Are they usually found in Penna. I know that they are usually not seen in New Jersey; but we have a few that stopped at the Wildlife refuge in this area of the shore. Strange. Very nice photo.

Snowy owls had a super successful breeding season in the arctic this summer, partly because of an abundance of lemmings (their primary prey). The adults returned to their winter territories and the immature birds have had to push farther south to find roosting territory for the winter. They have been seen in places like North Carolina and even Bermuda this year. This is often called an "erruption year" for the species. This is the biggest erruption for snowy owls on record, I believe. We have seen several in PA (even one in Philadelphia), heard about them in NJ, and other areas that have never or rarely seen one.
BTW, the heavy brown streaks on the body are an indication of an immature snowy owl. Adults are almost pure white.
I love the pictures! Wish I'd been able to get close enough to the ones I've seen for a good photo, but they've only been at binocular distance for me so far.
So far this Winter 13 distinct Snowy Owls have been seen on Cape Cod. Very unusual but a great chance to photograph them.
Good shots, Daniel! I love it out there in Lancaster County! It seems so easy to find photo ops! We'll be out that way again in March.
