I have been trying to decide if I want to spend the money for a canon 100-400 lens. This past summer I spent many hrs watching and taking pictures of some Osprey Birds. Just don't know if I can justify the cost of a lens.

I understand. I fought it and fought it. I considered the Sigma 150-500 and read everything I could on that one. Being that I would likely have to buy it off ebay, I was concerned with how well it would work with my canon 60d - and I know that many have wonderful results with it. I just felt that if I could hold out and get the canon lens, then there would be no question of how well it worked. And, I was worried a bit about spending that kind of money on ebay and potentially lose out.
When I saw this one on craigslist, I must have responded within minutes of her posting it. The price was several hundred below what seems to be the average price on ebay, and she told me she bought it in 2012. Our emails back and forth and her giving me her cellphone number first along with other info helped me feel good about it. Face to face, in a public place, and then the date code put it at May of 2012, I got really lucky for sure.
Thanks for the response. I am going to keep my eyes open. I did get to try one at the biginning of Dec. It was nice, but needed more time with it. Maybe I will be as lucky as you were finding one at a great deal.

Good luck with it, you will definitely be pleased.
Great shots - stay with it. Not difficult to hand-hold...but, there's a spot in the eagle shot. You may want to use Photoshop to remove it. But do consider having the lens cleaned from the inside. Cheers & happy shooting...

Thanks shivy! On that spot, someone earlier mentioned about cleaning the sensor. I was so excited about the picture, I never saw that spot. I'll be checking that out. Thanks again!
