Yes. I have tried it with a loop in the bottom end of the string, but find it a pain to slip it on and off my foot. That silly string never wants to keep that loop open for easy access. So, the largest washer I could find in the hardware store solved that problem.
The upward pressure actually is very little, just enough to hold the camera steady.
Definitely a "make-do" solution, I prefer a tripod or even monopod, but it is, to me at least, a helpful make-do solution.
It is indeed a helpful solution, esp. in those places where a tripod or monopod is forbidden because of safety concerns, even though photography is allowed, such as museums (I love to shoot in museums), where often there is very little light. The thing is sometimes called a
or some variation. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want to make it. Some people use picture wire. Some make them with adjustable loops. Some make them with carabiners, and the loop can be shortened to attach to your belt. Depending on how it's used it can gain you a stop or two, and make all the difference between at least sort-of sharp and mush in places where trying to use anything else would likely get you ejected. :D  They cost next to nothing to make and take up hardly any room in a pocket.
