By 'the change is "off"', you mean that pressing the top of the multi-select does nothing? That seems inconsistent with p 55 of the manual, and that's a problem.

When shooting is set to 'auto' and scene selection is 'auto' and I press the flash selector at the top of the multi-select ring, my only options are: 'auto' and 'off'.

I think "Auto mode" and scene mode "Auto" are two different things. You want the first, not the second.

When I press 'scene' 'auto mode' is at the top. Just below that is the 'scene' mode. The selection there is 'auto scene' or any of the other scenes available, such as portrait, party, museum, pet, etc. The 'red eye reduction' is only available in certain scene modes. The instructions and camera are awfully confusing for a point/shoot camera!

Select the "Auto Mode" at the top, not the one next to the "Scene" button. See p. 24 of the manual for what I'm talking about.

I did. And the only adjustments made in that mode were to select 'Vivid color' and the 'BSS'.

You said you had different shooting mode options. In "Auto Mode", you should not have any other options like "Portrait".

Sorry, I meant to say scene modes. There is a selection for 'auto scene' in the scene mode or I can select things like portrait, party, museum, pets etc.

I can only look at the book now. I did so much fiddling with the camera that the battery died. It's now charging.

Ok, try "Auto Mode", separate from the "Scene modes" when it's charged. You should have all five flash mode options available.

Auto Mode was always selected. I have to select something like portrait in scene mode in order to all five flash modes available.

If I'm reading the manual correctly, I don't think so. When you move from the top of the 5 shooting modes to the second one, where you can select a scene mode, you are no longer in "Auto Mode". But it's hard to explain this if you can't try it.

"Auto mode" and the "Scene modes" are different things. That means that the Auto Shooting Mode is different than the Auto Scene Mode. I could make it more confusing, but I don't want to compete with the manual. :-)

I think you are right in saying that the auto mode and the scene modes are different things. And I'm trying to remember what the LCD reads when a scene mode is selected, other than the scene icon is viewed on the lcd, but the 'vivid' and 'bss' are also seen on the lcd when a scene mode is selected.

By the way, thank you so much for trying to help me with this coolpix. I feel guilty that you are spending so much time on this.

Welcome, I've seen a few of your posts and have enjoyed them. I too am a computer guy, a software engineer by education and I have my own computer networking and repair business in Austin, TX. But, photography is beginning to take over my life... Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Thanks! Does your company benefit from its proximity to Dell?
In the next few months, I hope to post much more of my "portfolio", I'll include links here as I do.

You're welcome. Let me know what you find when you're able to try it with a charged battery, and some time. :-)
