Thank you. Looks like your just up the road from me. I am working on a project photographing old gas stations in operation or not. Do you have any up there in your neck of the woods?

In Colo there's a restored historic service station, cafe and motel. It's very near the intersection of highway 65 and the old Lincoln highway. It's called Niland's Cafe. I can't think of any others offhand.

Carla - I am up in the Sequim area at least twice a year. There are only two ways to and from the Bay Area: I-5 for speed and US101 for scenery. Anything else is asking for trouble. I've lost my windshield on a gravel road behind a logging truck while, another time, one nearly pushed me into a ravine trying to pass where there wasn't a second lane. No more back roads for me!

Selkirk - that sounds just as scary. I see you are in Oakland. I used to live in Alameda about 6 years ago. I miss the Bay Area and all the great restaurants, don't miss all the people. Got to be way too many people for me. Or maybe just getting older I like a little slower pace of life.

I agree with you, which is why I pass through Sequim "at least" 2x/year on my way to rural Vancouver Island even if it means leaving my husband back in Oakland.

I finally registered after reading the forum for several months. I like the fact that everyone is friendly and lot of you are in me age range. I have been doing photography as a hobby since the film days. I got my very first camera for Christmas in 1961. I thought the little green square box was awesome. As a 11 year old I annoyed everyone taking their picture, till I discovered taking pics of things other than people. The first camera I bought was a Yashica rangefinder. At one point it graduated into a Canon AE1 and built my own black and white dark room. I would be in there for hours developing and printing photos. I was one of those who did not want to give up my film camera. However, I finally bought a the first digital Canon Rebel that came out and last year I upgraded to the Canon 60D. I am loving it, being able to see the pics instantly and I love using the computer to play with them. So enough about me. I mainly do landscape and love to travel.

I am glad to have found such a friendly group of photogs. I have learned a lot and hope to learn even more.

Hi and welcome from another fellow Iowan. I am one of the amateurs on here but I have learned more on this site in 3 months than I learned in 3 years trying to figure it out for myself. Old gas stations sound like a fun project. Iowa is also good for old barns and country churches. I figure someone has to record them before they are all gone. The Prairie restoration near your town is one of my favorite places to take pictures and they have started to have photo walks.
