Need Your Computer Advice

I have my PC Laptop which has been doing fairly well on programs and graphics but I have a Xmas chance for an Ipad Air.

I need clear advise from Hoggers on this possible switch.

1. What on-board memory is recommended for the operating system to operate fairly fast?

2. Is the on-board graphics card and memory good for Adobe and Photo Shop and Elements 11 ?

3. What storage capacity is recommended and/or can the Ipad Air access an external hard drive ?

I look forward to intelligent specific recommendations/advice.

If I change, is the learning curve difficult?

An iPad (any model) is not a computer. It doesn't have the same operating system, ram, or motherboard/chip needed for computing. It doesn't operate any Photoshop. There are photography apps that have some of the functionality that you are used to but not much. Stick with your PC until you need a new one.

Hi Sarge I'm on my I Pad right now , I wouldn't think of giving up my desk top for this thing, but I can sit in front of the TV and go through my E Mail and peruse the Ugly Hedgehog for hours, I kinda look at this thing as a toy but it is fun and the Grandkids love it.

Remember Google? It really is your friend, depending on how one looks at things. Links abound across the http://www.worldwelivein.org saying that, "Yes...Adobe Photoshop can now work on an Ipad.". Full version? Didn't get that far. Recommended? Depends on your needs. Comparable to a PC? Not for a long-time...which in this computer age...might be a year...or 2. But it can be done.

Sarge, I have an Asus tablet and I am not happy with it when compared to a computer. If I want to download images to share some photos with friends, etc., it is very nice, larger screen (than a phone) and very portable. Okay to review e-mail and perhaps surf the web, mine is slower than my PC, so I give up easily. My two cents, perhaps save your money? Gary

Keep doing what U are rite now. Don't mess with any MicSft version 8. . . with 64 bit formatted drive. No 32 bit prgs. work on V8-64 unless u reformat a chunk of the drive to 32 bit. That's a pain in the as_! It takes a bunch of $$ to play games with "touch & go" squares on a $500/$700 terminal. NOT incl. with computer. Other software companies, i.e. Corel, etc. are more than happy to sell you a new version of what already works on ur present 32 bit machine.

I'm using a keyboard on an XP since 2002. XP has to get unplugged from INTERNET in a few months. Lack of support by MicSft. JERKS..... THEY ARE!! With a dick head for a CEO - who they are ditching in a few months.

Mine sits on a bench in back room until MSft get's their crap together for the Ver 8. With an affordable keyboard and normal terminal.

STAY Away from:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R21WGO1KZQZ773/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R21WGO1KZQZ773

My present 12 yr. old XP crashed 3 times. I took the declared "crashed disk" with me when I picked up the machine. Was going to tear into it and see what it looked like. WHOA! Discovered more plugs on the connection to the new hard drive. They fit into the "crashed disk" . . . . VOILA! I discovered I had another drive - "E" . . . I use the "C" drive for my programs etc. only. All my text, etc. files were intact on the old "C" drive... Now my "E" drive. In addition I added a Seagate320 external drive for more storage. Plus I still have 2 "drives that were declared trash by repair persons" on the shelf.

Only thing I added to the XP was the max. amount of RAM it would hold. Purchased from DELL, plugged it in.... nothing else goes wrong with the XP.

I'd look for a machine that operates with Windows 7. . . . . for cheap. Your present, 32 bit programs should work on that machine. Ask the seller about that?

NOT FROM AMAZON!

An iPad IS a computer, but it's not a general-purpose computer the way a PC or a Mac is. There is no such thing as an iPad Air. There is an iPad and there is an iPad Mini, which is just a smaller-screen iPad.

The MacBook Air is a Mac laptop with Mac OS X, i.e., a general-purpose operating system. The Air is a lighter weight laptop than the MacBook Pro and lacks a few hardware features. Tech specs for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are available at:

WOW BatManPete...

Could you be any more harsh, wrong and narrowminded.

None of what you said about Windows 8 or Microsoft is true.

In fact, Windows 8 is improved over both XP and Windows 7, as it is faster and stabler than any previous Microsoft Operating System.

I teach Windows 8.... in 64 bit. It has a 32 bit emulation mode built into the system. At this point in time, I have not run into any software 8 won't run.

I have made a successful living for well over twenty years teching, building, teaching and consulting on PC's and Windows OS.

It's absolutely easy to configure Windows 8 to run like Windows 7, including the start menu, and avoid the tablet stuff until you get your productivity where you like it.

Man, you need to relax..... Go out and get a massage, particularly one with a happy ending:thumbup:... so you can blow off all that pressure. You're gonna explode!!!
(and it's likely to be messy)

Ok, I don't really have a relevant comment to add to the question about iPad vs. laptop, but I just had to jump in here and suggest that you go to the Apple website and see for yourself that the newest iPad is indeed called the iPad Air. So please don't confuse the issue by saying that "There is no such thing as an iPad Air."
Ok, I've put in my 2 cents' worth and I feel better. Sorry if I've ruffled any feathers.....

I know! If you blink, technology changes another leap. Good idea also to sit corrected since it's so difficult to type while standing.....
