It's become a more even playing field since technology is getting ever-better. Producing excellent images is becoming easier and cheaper. Ten years ago, who would have thought that you could shoot 6+fps at a sporting event, in the rain, with every shot in focus and perfectly exposed, printable to at least 30x50?!

HB3: I switched from DSLRs (Canons) to mirrorless (EM-1) for a couple reasons. Those are: size and weight reductions, and focus performance. I don't really need phenomenal high-ISO performance (at least not better than the 3200/6400 the EM-1 gives me). Now having done that and said what I said, I miss a full-monty big-ass DSLR every now and then (not that often). As full-frame continues to get better, I might just buy a full-frame high MP body and a phenomenal 24mm, 28mm or 35mm and let it stay at that. Or I get a mmf-3 adapter and pick up the Zuiko ultra wide king-of-the-hill zoom and slap it on my EM-1. The lure of full-frame has a very strong appeal...
BTW, tjgphoto, your punctuation habits make for difficult reading! No offense.

Sorry about that. I do that a lot , mostly when I'm using ipad.

No kidding, it was a big change for me going from film to dslr. But i still gravitate to the slr from time to time . I still love the film.

Tjg: I was just saying to my wife the other day that I miss the "analog" look of film, with its nuances, especially in black and white. What kind of DSLR rig do you use? Also, what's your film rig?
I just pulled out an old OM-2 and an Olympus Epic Stylus (!). Black and while (Ilford Delta 400) in the Epic and color (Portra 160) in the OM-2.

Since I shoot w/ a D800e and have many 2.8 lenses, I must differ on the speed of focus. The focus is mostly dependent on the LENS. SWM focus is blindingly fast, while the old motor driven focus is slow and will hunt on occasion. My daughter uses the Canon 40D and she doesn't complain and probably outshoots me. But, it really is a matter of preference and what you started with and what interchanges with what you have.

Merry and Blessed Christmas to all of you.

I'm surprised you didn't get your daughter a D7100 for Christmas, and get her on the Nikon Bandwagon.

You got it! Religion, politics, sexual orientation are the three big hitters that classically generate volumes of loud histrionics. At the hog camera brands generate are endless asinine pissing contests.

Look, professional sports photographers don't use Nikon's 5200 nor the Canon T5i. More and more, they are using the Nikon D4. The fundamental question about brand choices is a highly personal one. I've been and still am a Nikon shooter. I started before Nikon HAD slr cameras with Nikon's superlative S-2 and SP models (still have them and still shoot them on occasion). Canon makes some excellent gear. But it seems to me that you choose canon if you want a video camera that takes stills and you choose Nikon if you want a still camera that shoots video. Most of the old guard are still shooting from the dark side.

You got a point there. I found NIKON more rugged compared to Cannon. I have used both. My opinion is NIKON more trustworthy when you are out there in the field. NIKON is a cult among professionals.

I find it very unsettling to hear people switch from one brand to another for the stupidest of reasons, one reason was 1 model didn't have one ability to do one thing, that is actually a pro feature and it was not a pro model! I've been a photographer since 1978. I've always used NIKONs. I remember when u almost had to know someone to get one, always considered pro cameras, I think its a case of. FOLLOW THE CROWD! The younger generation college boy, seems to think canon is the best! Then they say , they can't afford the D800 for example, I'm open minded, i own a few canon slr's. All of them are broken, I also carry a nikon fe regularly , had it since 1979' it still works fine, as far as today's dslr, i use D800'. D7k,D7100'. Can't get much better in my opinion, and before someone says I need to try the 5dmk3. I did for a week, feels like a toy. As far as quality, it's ok,, doesn't hold a candle to the D800'. And then there's the statements like, I want pro results but with a price point of 600 bucks, Wake up, U get what u pay for. And that's the way it is America.

Sounds like someone got a lump of coal in their stocking this year. Merry Christmas.
