Just my opinion, the L-series is the best you can get for canon. I have a Tamron and love it but I know the Canon would be a much better lense for a little more money. I paid about $800 for my tamron to save $400. I am wishing I would have spent the little extra for my investment.
Generally agree. Although, for Nikons, there are a few very strong contenders from Tamron, Sigma, and even Tokina. But I think you have to do the research to find them, while the high end Nikon glass is consistently at the highest levels.

But, SS, that's 5 1/2 years of beer supply!
Piker! Try six months... :-)
The UK price for this lens is £10599 (MkII). After that you will need a tripod that can handle 6Kg. Add the Wimberley head and plate - you're looking at an additional £1000. I saved hard and did that earlier this year. All I need now is someone to carry it - any takers? Merry Xmas to all Hoggers.
The letters mean that its focal length is 600 mm, it has a maximum aperture opening of 4.0 which is only one stop greater than the best at 2.8 The IS means that it has image stabilization along with an USM ultrasonic motor drive. The ef means that it can be used on a full frame lens from Canon. it's a fixed and prime lens, top of the line and if you can afford it, buy it, my friend. By all means, buy it. You will absolutely fall in love with it.

Half price of new on eBay right now. New about $13,000!!!
Wow, about what I paid for my used Honda Civic. Sure would like to add that lens to my collection.
You can be lucky by being at the right time at the right place. I paid 1/2 for my medical 200mm micro lens in mint shape with none of the accessories missing just because the sellers had no way of testing the ring light flash and sold it as is. I made out when I checked it out and all was well. I'm always on the lookout for used expensive glass if the price leaves me room for repairs involving the electronics.

Here's a picture I snapped yesterday at the Bronx Botanical Gardens. That's at least a 600mm Nikon and the type of tripod you'll need.
OH WOW! guess i best go with a smaller lens, as much as i would love that. i live in the pineywoods and would love to get better wildlife photography, and that looks like the lens that would do the trick.
i want to thank everyone for their response to my question. i know it has been a year since i posted it. i have been taking photography classes and loving every minute of it. i have learned a lot from all of you. altho i would love to have the lens i asked about, it is not reasonable for me any longer. my mobility is almost depleted. i still want a good telescopic lens, but alas, that one is out of the question. thank you, dead2fred for the optical clue to what i was wanting (that sucker is huge) and again, thank you everyone for your responses

i don't know that much about high priced lenses, but i do not for the life of me understand why anyone who would even look at, or consider a piece of glass that cost 2 arms and 2 legs, would not understand the numbers??? maybe i am just dense. thanks for listening
yes, alby, you are dense. i asked because i was curious as to what would make it so expense. i asked because i wanted to know what the numbers are for. i asked because maybe some day i could afford something like that, as most of the pictures i take are outdoors and of wildlife, that is my passion in the photography field. i am fortunate enough to be around big cats whenever i feel the urge. i asked because i just wanted to know. and what does it matter as to why i am looking? i am always will to learn and am not too dense to do so.
