The best possible reason for doing so. And, often, that's the way to get the best pictures too.

After reading most of the thread 'I will never understand people's egos' I thought it would be fascinating to find out how many professional photographers frequent this forum?

For this discussion let's define "Professional" as anyone who currently earns at least 25% of their income from photography.

If you didn't know already I am NOT a professional, nor any other kind of photographer. I am still just a picture taker.[/quot

Hi RTR: I'm in the same position that you are, I'm a picture taker. Definately not a Pro... I'm reasonably certain if I tried to sell anything I have taken so far photograph wise I would have trouble eveb giving it away. That being said I am learning something new every day, that I hope will improve my photo's enough that some day I will be taking photo's some one will really want. We all have to start some where and I'm starting late in life. Just a wanted to say thanks to all the Pro's and very talented Amatures for sharing their wealth of knowledge with every one here at UHH. I'm glad you asked the question.[/quote]

Hi Travlnman,

To me it sounds like you have some fair, good, great photos that someone, somewhere, would like, maybe even need, to buy from you, but you have stage fright and are afraid of those nasty little rejection slips that sometimes end up in someone's mail.
Forget all about those, pick up some magazines that have photos similiar to what you have, i.e. people, places, things, and write the Photo Editor, or the head man, asking for a copy of their "Wants List." Not the Stock Agencies. Go straight to the main source.
All it costs you to find out if you are on the same page as the Photo Editors is, at this moment, 44 cents.
Try it, you might like it.l

Hi jolly Thank you for the encouragement. I really appreciate the input. I have posted some of my pictures to a website. You are more than welcome to look them over. They are among my all time favorite. Most were taken with my old hp315 point and shoot. The others were taken with my 5D mark II set on auto. None of them have been through any post processing. I'm still learning that as well here is the web site http://www.photoshop.com/users/travlnman46 You're more than welcome to down load or play with any of them and repost them here if you like.

Not a pro either. I just found Manual on my Canon SX230 HS point and shoot.
I have an album site on Webshots that has been visited over 650,000 times. Mainly pictures of my garden and vacations. Some are pretty pictures showing good design and composition, but most are for the plant geeks. Conifer nuts and Japanese Maple freaks. I call it a man's garden because of the lack of a lot of high maintenance perennials. A cottage garden, it isn't.

This is funny, I have done some photos that I worked at and made a few dollars..but I am just a picture taker also.
I like taking them without trying to win anything...
But when I do a good one I am pleased...
Not a pro.....

25% of my income from photography?
How about 25% of my discretionary income spent on photography? That would be closer.

I'm strictly a picture taker.

Sorry to say... picture taker here. My education was in nursing and nursing education, but it was in my later years that I fell in love with photography. I am sorry to say if I had to live on what I make from photography, I would go hungry.... therefore I guess my profession will always be medical and my hobby would be photography as well as painting and genealogy. LOL!!!

No ego problem here. I've been a shooter for at least 55 years out of my 65. Plenty of darkroom experience. Several hundred photos published. I'm just an amateur, perhaps slightly advanced, but still just an amateur. Some of the best photographs I have ever viewed from others were taken with disposable P/S. Why? The shooter had the "EYE". For me, it's the "EYE" that separates an amateur from a pro. So...I think we have a lot of "PRO's" here. It's never about the equipment...it's always in the "eye".

I guess it depends on definition for what purpose. For Federal Incom Tax, it's making a profit at least 2 out of 7 yrs. Note, that's profit after expenses. If you don't meet that criteria, you are a hobbyist and cannot deduct expenses anymore.

Quite. Jolly1 and I have already disagreed about his definition.

And as I've said before, you're not disagreeing with me, but with the United States Government. But then almost everybody is disagreeing with the government these days.

On the whole, I think it's safer to disagree with the government than with the IRS. As far as I recall, I'm also still waiting for a statutory or other written reference on the subject of exactly where and how I am disagreeing with the government, but it may be that this has slipped my mind. Many things do, nowadays.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just asking for clarification, and if you have already provided it, I apologize.

Cheers,

R.

Not exactly - If you are a hobbyist and earn any revenue (selling pictures, etc.) and reported the income on your tax return you can always deduct expenses attributable to that revenue to the extent of the revenue. That is, you can't show a loss.
