Your picture reminds me - the post office has reissued that upsidedown plane stamp from, what, 1911?
How about an upside down Barack Obama stamp instead???

Great shot.
I don't think they'll do much crossing in this, it's only three passes. And they're kind of out of practice. :-(
Why are they "kind of out of practice"? Do you think they are " kind of out of practice" in their general flying skills? These people do not get " kind of out of practice". The are professional "steely eyed killers", and that profession does not get " kind of out of practice".
I enjoy this blog a lot. But it is disheartening when things move away from
photo talk to criticism about other than the images and politics.
I come here to get new knowledge from people that have the same passion as I
do and frankly I hope they are better then me so I can learn.
If we're talking photo let's stay on subject and leave the other stuff in the "other" folder. Thanks guys I've learned a lot here and I'd like to continue coming back.

Yes, of course they're professionals. But they also practice to keep working well as a team.
The Blue Angels canceled their entire air show season this year, including their "practice shows". They are based in Pensacola, FL, and a friend worked at the naval base there as a civilian contractor, so I was going to visit him and shoot the show and some practice sessions. The whole trip got scuttled, and I'm still bitter about all the missed photos!
Pick your shooting spot then start framing what you want to appear in your photo(s). Then choose your sharpest lens that will capture what you want.

I shot these pictures of the Thunderbirds,, with a 100-400 l cannon lens, at 1/1000 iso 200 F5.6,, big thing is to set focus to AI focus is using a cannon camera which keeps tracking as they move . Have fun
My suggestion would be to go manual focus with the lens set to infinity. That way the lens is not "searching" against the sky in the background and delaying shutter release. Even with a stout telephoto the planes should be at the infinity range. Just my 2 cents worth which at today's exchange rate means I owe you money.
All of the following is good advice. I would also suggest you set your exposure compensation a couple of stops brighter so that the sky does not fool the camera and you get photos with no plane detail

I'm going to try and photograph the Blue Angels coming down the Hudson River today. Going in front of the One World Trade Center. I'm asking for clues on what apeture and shutter speed I should try? I'll probably take some photos on continuious, in the program mode. But, I think they will be passsing a couple of times. I'm hoping they get low enough to get the Statue of Liberty in the photo. Also, I have three lenses. Wide angle 10-20mm, 18-105mm, and 55-300mm. Lowest aperture around f4. Of course that's at the lowest focal length. Any suggestions? Thanks
I'm going to try and photograph the Blue Angels co... (

Depending on your light, I'd go ISO400 Shutter speed priority @ 1/1000. You should get good results.
I would shoot in aperature priority with an ISO of 400 and let the camera take care of the shutter speed. f5.6 is my guess. Tried shooting them at Oceana NAS some years ago on an Olympus OM-10 with ASA-400 and didn't have much luck. Now in the digital age you should due just fine.

When I shot things like that with my OM's, I'd either find some ASA 800 film, or or shoot like it was and get it push processed.
