Pretty harsh treatment for children that age by todays standards. I wonder how their lives unfolded as they aged.

It is sad, I imagine life expectancy for them was not great at all. Must have been very hard lives for them.

Seems like it would have been less strain on every one to have give them some decent clothes. They certainly looked as if they could have all used them.
