Correct, it won't hurt your D5200 or any other base model Nikon DSLR. You just have to continue shooting in manual. That's metering as well as focus in manual mode only...There are people who can convert the lens for you if you desire to use it on other, upscale Nikon DSLR bodies....John White is one of those people... http://www.aiconversions.com/

A non Ai lens will work perfectly fine on a D5200. The Nikkor 105 f2.5 is a very fine lens indeed. I suggest using it rather than mothballing it. It was considered the finest portrait lens made by Nikon at one time.

Oliver.

Or you can send it to me, so I can adapt it to my camera :-) I've been on the lookout for an old 105mm

I also have one that I am not using, and I'd be glad to trade it to you for a 24-120 f4 you are not using.

No it will NOT be any sharper. If the old lens is working for you and the manual focus is not a problem, save your money and stay with what works.

okay, so i'm the new guy and let me muddy the waters even further.
nikon first came out with the 105 2.5 for the nikon rangefinder cameras. i use one with my s3.
and i agree the 105 2.5 is a wonderful lens either on the rangefinder or the nikon slr cameras. while nikon is not doing conversions, you might check with your local repairman. if he belongs to the society of photo technicians (SPT), he may be able to obtain the needed parts for an ai conversion.
i also have the 105 f2 dc lens (along with the 135dc) and it is a great lens also, but i use it for a very specific purpose. gotta remember, i do film, not digital, so be warned (heh, heh). my 105 2.5 nikkor is a 55 year old favorite and i would really recommend you continue to use it (especially on a nikon f!)

Welcome!

You didn't muddy the waters at all.

Just a warning, we have a troll here who will get mad at your "slop English". We will all then laugh at him for his poor grammar. I think he really doesn't like when new people don't capitalize, but that's his problem. The rest of us just listen to what you're saying and enjoy the conversation. :-)

Don't have one...unless you consider my Olympus 12-60 f2.8-4 (24-120 equiv)...in which case it wouldn't work on your system.

I have an old 105mm from the 70's that I use on my Nikon 5200 in manual mode. Would the new 105 be any sharper? I find the old 105 to be pretty darn sharp. I use it primarily for head and shoulder shots. Any thoughts?

If it ain't broken don't fix it.

That's if he's got a "Micro" lens & not the old standard 105mm F2.5 lens

Nikon at one time used the term "Micro" where other manufacturers used the term "Macro". The terms are interchangeable in my opinion. I used the Nikkor 105 2.5 Micro years ago on my FM and FE bodies and it was a fantastic lens.

thanks, although I do have the lens, it wouldn't be a fair trade anyway for you.

What will the ai conversion do for me exactly?

It will allow you to use the lens under manual focus while set to aperture priority. check the "search" , ( try ai conversion) I seem to remember a site that specializes in converting pre ai, ais lenses for a very reasonable price. If you can't find it, you might try MT, he would probably remember who does that service. Good Luck.

Should have been listed for Gdelvecc. Sorry about that.
