I have used FastStone Image Viewer for years and it is the best. I love the way it displays my images and the speed at which it does so. It is free, but you can give a donation, which I did. I look at my RAW images right out of the card with it and do a preliminary sort before moving my RAW images to the external hard drive that houses them (I use the windows Explorer to do that). It is a great little program and I prefer it hands down to Bridge.

Hi Hoggers,

NOTE: this is not for standard photography use.

I am in need of software that is good for viewing photos almost exclusively. I am currently using ACDSee and Irfanview. The usage is 99% viewing of tiff files for a construction company. Maybe 1% of the time an adjustment needs to be made to them, mostly exposure and contrast. ACDSee is great but that involves a paid license and 99% is wasted as we don't use it to its full potential. Irfanview on the other hand is free but is restrictive when zooming in and out, making minor adjustments among other things.

Can anyone suggest a nice, easy to use and free program to use. We need to zoom in and out quickly, jump to the next page and quickly pan around each image. The ability to clean up an image of ink blotches from multiple faxing would also be a nice addition but we don't have that now so not imperative.

Online programs are out, only ones that we can install on each computer. Thanks in advance.

You already have Irfanview. That is free, and is a very capable viewer. I would suspect that you would have to pay to get a better program...

I'm about tenth on the list for Faststone Image Viewer...

No software is more free than Faststone.

It has incredible post processing capabilities aside from being one of the best viewers and presentation program I have used.

There is also an 80 plus page downloadable user manual showing all the capabilities.

It is a "shell type" viewer, meaning it follows your My Pictures folder in exactly the same way as if you went into My Pictures through the Libraries icon. It does allow you to delete, and move files and folders, but it does so without disrupting the
Window system functions. It does not create it's own catalog, nor does it move files to some obscure proprietary location.

Has layers, curves, and batch functions like batch rename, batch exposure changes, etc.

I mention all these functions, but it can also be used in the simplest of forms..... simply as an image viewer.

Oh... and did I mention, along with the other posters who suggested it....it's free. I do donate however.

With all the accolades for Fastone and testing for the last couple of hours, consider me converted.  I also discovered Fastone MaxViewer which also fits right in with our needs. As we are using it commercially we will pay for the licenses instead of donations.

Thanks to all that responded. :-D

FastStone MaxView lets you open and view a zip file if images without unzipping. I archive a session in a zip file before I start dealing with pictures. If I ever need to go back to the zip to check originals, MaxView lets me without wasting the time and space to unzip.
