Back in 1971, I found a seafood company in St Louis that had some for 5 bucks a pound. I bought three pounds and tried cooking it....I knew how difficult it was to cook...under and overcooked it got tough.....Well I ruined it...., so I know what you mean. Whenever I come to the Bay area (last time was 2009) I stop off at a bar in Pescadaro, where they have it on their menu at a little bar and restaurant. It's something like 45 bucks for an Entree' But I paid that much the last time I ate it on Fisherman's Wharf in SF, so I always stop and have some.....I would classify it as my favorite sea food. There is even a restaurant in the Suburbs of St Louis that serves it from time to time. If you call before hand they have it flown in and I think it is farm raised...But it is about the same price as buying it in California. I tried harvesting some in the 60s and was not successful at doing so...Those little buggers would sense me and latch onto the rocks like superglue. There is a book written by famed Aerobatic Pilot Patty Wagstaff, called Fire and Air; A Life on The Edge. In it she talks about working at Abalone Harvesting before she became an airshow pilot.

You need a crowbar to get those suckers off the rocks. They are enforcing the limits and the seasons very strict now. A few months back the caught a bunch of guys poaching off season and selling to some restaurants around here, even they were fined for buying the illegal catch.
