Jwilliams0469, you take fantastic photographs. I like the second place winner! I had to deal with a similar situation that was so ridiculous that the attached photo is how I protested. The winning photo in a contest that was for B/W was of the "winners" medicine cabinet with his pic. reflected in the mirror and a neon blue zig-zag color felt tipped marker scribbled around it! The prize was $250.00 The next contest the same judges were doing it so that is why the "neon angel" was so funny to enter. I still laugh at the look on their faces when I submitted it! Find a way to humorously or otherwise clear your psyche of the event and please don't let the cheaters win by stopping entering contests! I am surprised at the nasty tone and comments some are submitting to this forum! To those I say get a life and stop being so negative about something someone brings up at this forum! All of us have been treated unfairly at one time or another...does being nasty help YOU feel better?

You can always opt out of recieving any future notifications, if you think the pic is that bad.

Let's see one of your best pics, I am curious to see how well your reflections are.

Here is a reflection I did last fall with a mere point and shoot. Perhaps that is all JW can afford?

Sorry, I think you have me confused? I don't shoot with P&S, I shoot with Canon EOS Rebel models, this particular photograph was done with a T1i... The photograph the Grand prize winner took was with a P&S camera...

Conversely, the resulting publicity will place the "pond picture" on a par with Ansel Adams' portfolios, rocketing him to the fame and fortune stolen by this well planned and executed conspiracy.

I this is the end of this post... I am quick to say that one person seems to have a major issue, although unable to provide any of his work as asked. I have nothing else to say. All has been said. If he/she likes the view upside down better, then it shows just how upside down he/she really is... I will no longer be watching this topic so all has been said and done on my behalf. Thank all of you for your kindness and opinions, you all have been great. Thanks.

Many contests prevent "popularity" contests by allowing only the participating photographers to vote. No ballot box stuffing possible.

I suspect a revision of rules is coming before next contest.

I really do hope a revision is coming! This year has been a disaster...

Might be worth your effort to contact the organizers and SUGGEST very strongly that the judging be done only by the entrants, or BETTER YET by a selection of 2 or 3 local media photographers or local college art/photography professors. Then if they way general voting have a separate award of JUST A RIBBON for the "PEOPLE'S CHOICE". That way if there is a similar situation it is only good for a RIBBON and not the REAL prize!!

Come on people, get over yourselves, it wasn't that great an image to begin with. I personally don't think it would have won anyway.

I would have to disagree with you. BOTH of the pictures are very well done and are REAL prize winners.

I must commend you JW for taking the high road and from refraining from falling into the trap that trouble makers are trying to set. You are definitly the bigger man.
Oh and I think your photo is outstanding!

Sorry if I was unclear to the poster who was flaming you, my point was that whether you shoot a top of the line camera or a cell phone, the person stacking the deck in their favor was wrong. These guys criticizing your pic are missing the point that if one has to cheat to win, they really haven't won anything at all.

What I was trying to tell this person was that they didn't need to add insult to your injury by being an ass toward you. I then asked them to show a better picture if they have one. I got no response, or picture so that tells me they were just being trouble makers.

Your photo entry is a WINNER!!! It's beautiful.

Just remember, the 'cheater' will have to answer on 'judgment day.'

Opinion: Judging should be done by a minimum of three people with NO entrants present. Case in point: A gal pal won "Best of Division" at the State Fair (5 judges). The following year she entered the same image at the County Fair and didn't even get so much as an Honorable Mention (1 local judge). Judging is so subjective and you never know what the judges are looking for. Another issue: State Fair rules SPECIFICALLY state "NO PHOTOSHOP" images (other than cropping and clean-up) are allowed. When I went to view the results there was a 2nd place ribbon on an image that was b/w with selective color. Pretty obvious what had been done. So...when I went to collect my photos, I mentioned it to the person who had been chosen as the 'administrator' for the open entries in 2012. She was very much aware of the issue and said she would be policing the judging very carefully this year. Ahhhhh...we'll see if "the squeaky wheel gets the oil".

Despite the fact that you didn't win the $$$, you're still a winner to all your Hedgehog buddies. Don't be soured by one bad incident. Keep at it JW!!!

Surely God will not judge that person for cheating on a photo contest?

Nearly everyone here has missed the point of my original posting.
If Jwilliams phoos were really good, and I AM NOT saying that they weren't, why didn't the contest judges give him a first, second, or third place ribbon. There has been absolutely no mention of the judge's awards.
Also, if the minor "People's Choice" award was worth two thousand, five hundred dollars, what, in God's name, was the dollar amount of the First place ribbon awarded by the judges? Also for the Best of Show award?
And finally, is it really logical that anyone would, or could, round up eighty-five family members and friends who would all be willing to commit a dishonest act?
