I was where you are now a few years ago with my Nikon D40. I liked my 50mm lens in spite of the manual focus, which is easy to focus.

If you are able to exchange that lens, though, one consideration.
The 1.5x crop factor on DX cameras. On your D5100 the 50mm will actually produce closer to a 75mm picture. In family functions in a room, I sometimes couldn't get far enough back with foot zoom.

I now use, and love, the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S (on my current D7000).
With the more than ample 24 mpixels on your 5100, you can get a wider angle of view picture and then crop to zoom whatever want.

Just a thought, and prolly way more info than you wanted. Enjoy your camera!

It's not the "G" in the designation that's most important - it's the "S" in the AF-S, standing for Silent Wave Motor, as stated by amehta, or known perhaps as "Marilyn's Missing Link" ! Here's the official lens designation from Nikon's website ....

yes I am to buy only lenses that are AF-S. I didn't realize that when I purchased this lens so now I am stuck with it & will have to use manual focus unless I can sell it,which I doubt, seems like everyone has this lens already!

All "G" lenses always work on all the modern Nikon DSLR body including 5000 series. You are right of course, it's AF-S. There are FX or DX version, but both are right for the 5000 series body.

I would take it back to Best Buy. If your invoice says Best But I think they would take it back as long as it is not past the time limit for returns. I by stuff from KEH all the time through ebay and the receipt always says KEH in case there is a problem, that is who I would return it to, not ebay.

Advertise it here. If I hadn't just bought the same lens I would have bought it from you. I have a Nikon F100 and it was just what I needed. There may be someone with a film camera that can use it too.

There are a few "G" lenses which are *not* AF-S lenses.

Not everyone has the lens. Many start with the kit lenses with a D3x00/D5x00 body, and when they move up to the D7x00 or FX bodies, they think of the 50mm lens.

If you have a receipt from Best Buy I would still take it back to them, you might be surprised. What if it was defective, tell Best Buy it does not work on your camera and not that you ordered the wrong lens.

Marilyn - I'm sure that out of all these comments you'll also have gleaned the most important info about Nikon DSLR's for all Nikon buyers/users , i.e. unless you buy a camera that has has its own in-built focus motor, and none of the D3000/D5000 series does, then you are limited to buying AF-S lenses or using manual focus on any other lens. I don't know how the "alternative" solution grabs you ..... but you might think about changing your camera to one which has a focus motor ...... suggestions, the D7000, the D7100 or even a good used D300 which is just one magnificent camera.

Did you get it from the best buy store on ebay? They have a return if you are not satisfied policy. You could always send it back on say... December 26 or January 2. Who knows, by then, you might like manual focus!

You can emphasize that you don't want to return the lens, you want to exchange it for a more expensive lens. It will be difficult for them to say no to that.

I bought the same lens early this year for my D5000. I knew that focus would be manual, but the reviews convinced me that the quality made this worthwhile. On a DX camera, it's the equivalent of about a 76mm lens, and as someone else noted, sometimes I have to back up to get the composition I want, or alter the composition if that's not possible. I've found it to be a great lens. If you take it back to Best Buy, you'll likely lose money in the exchange, but if autofocus is that important to you, then good luck.

Oh no,I can't afford to buy another camera .I am retired with limited income so I am stuck with this camera for a good while that's for sure! I have some great lenses & I won't give them up for a 50mm lens, not worth it to me.

I understand Marilyn ! It was only a "suggestion". But manual focusing isn't that bad, except with moving subjects ! Good luck from here on !
