need help from you experts, I am considering buying a sturdy and well made tripod to support my d5100 with a 55mm-300mm lens. I am looking at the Davis and Sanford
Magnum Grounder xg-13 with the F-13 Fluid Panhead but I can't find much information on it, very few reviews on it. Has any one purchase this kit? I would like a video fluid panhead because they support a lot of weight but must have quick release plate short enough to fit my d5100. Willing to spend up to $350 on a kit, any recommendations, would truly hope for some feedback.
Thanks in advance

"One of the oldest and most respected" and I've never heard of them. I've got to do more reading. I'm surprised they didn't have pictures.

As posted already I have and use the Vanguard SBH-300 it is the best ball head I have ever had and the price is under $100.00 you can't go wrong with this ball head it's smooth to use and no creep with heavy lenses & camera's. I had mine for over a year now it's mounted on a Manfrotto 290 series tripod, I have used it on my Dolica too.

I don't know anything about the brand you mentioned. But i have the same camera and lens and I use theManfrotto Compact MKC3-H01. I bought it on sale at Best Buy earlier in the year. I am extremely happy with it. It came highly recommended by others and was around $100 but don't recall the exact price.

It would seem a good thing to look at the other current thread about heads.

About a tripod, I would suggest that the Vanguard Alta Pro 263A. I have been using this in the field for about a year and it has done everything I have asked of it. The legs can be spread out to get lower. The center colum will go verticle allowing even more flexibility. It is not too heavy and is stable.

The best advise when buying a tripod is to buy the best that you can afford for the intended job.
I have three tripods, a cheap Dolica that I use with my M43 system, a Manfrotto 3021 and a Gitzo. The Gitzo and Manfrotto tripods are heavy and excellent. I use a Linhof ballhead.
My experience with tripods made of carbon fiber is limited. I had the opportunity of using a Gitzo GT-2541 with a small RRS ballhead during a trip in September to the mountains of West Virginia and I tell you that it is a delight to use something so well built, light and steady. The combo is expensive though.

The Really Right Stuff and the Induro will be considerably above the OP's price range.

Yeah, I kind of thought the same thing, but you can read the company's history near the bottom of:
