Your photo is really good, but I really love the B & W interpretation.

I know how you feel, and I sympathize with you. I entered a contest sponsored by LI Newsday a couple of years ago and a similar thing happened. The winner was determined by email votes from the readership. So, if you've got a large family, and a lot of friends who have nothing to do but sit and email a vote, you're a definite winner. I'm not saying my photo was the best, but the winner was really bad.
On the positive side, 3 of my pictures were picked for my town's Civic Association calendar last year, and I've got 7 in this year. I guess I'm not that bad a photographer.
Keep plugging away at the legitimate contests. Anyone who appreciates good photography knows who the real winners were.

So, I entered this local Photography contest for a $2500.00 grand prize 1st place. I was watching it live from the "Live view cam" because we "the photographers" couldn't be there during the vote. and noticed a huge line of cars pull up all at the same time.
Getting to my point...
A lot of great photographers had submitted their work. And a new photographer this year had entered for the first time. That line of cars was all the family and friends of the "New Photographer" who's work really "SUCKS" by the way. Any who, they all got out of the cars and separated quickly because apparently they was told it would disqualify her automatically. A total of 86 votes on the worst photograph on the table. It had zero before they showed up. I came in second at 42 votes, and 3rd was a good friend at 19 votes. The way I see it, that photographer should have been disqualified after numerous photographers went and complained on the winning vote. Not one person from those vehicles even looked at the other art on the table it was a quick 1 go then the next go, even watching the first one go back and tell everyone where it was located on the table.

I am wondering what everyone else thinks about this? And if anyone can answer the question of why the judges couldn't rule her out do to the obvious situation?

Yeap the ballot box was stuff with all her F&F, she now goes home with the prize and get to show everyone her crappy photo for ever. They will feel they were supportive and she will feel hollow inside. Knowing that she did not win based on her ability, but by cheating.
At least lets hope so.
This also made the photo contest look like a joke, I would wright a letter to the sponsor (anonymously of course) and have all your F&F do the same complaining about the stuffing of the box, and ask them to look at thier rules.

Or you can go with the line of "life is not fair". or something like that, and never enter the contest again. Recoginizing that you can't win unless your a really good at ralling F&F.

Rachel! You've been a favorite of mine! I agree with everything you have said. Myself and most of the photographers have decided it's best to just leave it be as she has already taken the check. She may have cheated, but we are seeing it as "she has only cheated herself".

qutie sure he offerd some of the money to his family and friends. you said that the photographer could not be there didn't say anything about family or friends. that contest should have been judged by independent judges. if it cost you anything to enter this contest you were ripped off.

I'm sure you are right about (her) offering some of the money to family and friends. The photographer's could not be present at the event but we was able to watch from live view ( open source web cam ). We "the photographers" had to signature the rules paper which stated " Absolutely NO family or friends of the artist may attend this event as by doing so WILL result in a disqualification for the artist." It wasn't written exactly like that but that's the best I can remember it by word. Then we all (The photographers) received a carbon copy of the rules. The only money it cost me was "gasoline". :-)

Your photo entry is a WINNER!!! It's beautiful.

Just remember, the 'cheater' will have to answer on 'judgment day.'

Opinion: Judging should be done by a minimum of three people with NO entrants present. Case in point: A gal pal won "Best of Division" at the State Fair (5 judges). The following year she entered the same image at the County Fair and didn't even get so much as an Honorable Mention (1 local judge). Judging is so subjective and you never know what the judges are looking for. Another issue: State Fair rules SPECIFICALLY state "NO PHOTOSHOP" images (other than cropping and clean-up) are allowed. When I went to view the results there was a 2nd place ribbon on an image that was b/w with selective color. Pretty obvious what had been done. So...when I went to collect my photos, I mentioned it to the person who had been chosen as the 'administrator' for the open entries in 2012. She was very much aware of the issue and said she would be policing the judging very carefully this year. Ahhhhh...we'll see if "the squeaky wheel gets the oil".

Despite the fact that you didn't win the $$$, you're still a winner to all your Hedgehog buddies. Don't be soured by one bad incident. Keep at it JW!!!

I very much agree with ya! I know this contest was about the same rules on "Photoshop" The only edits allowed was exactly the same as you've stated and this is at most of the contest I've entered.

I really appreciate your kindness! But really, on Hedgehog, we are all winners!!! Thank you!

I see you said "her" in your address so I assume it was a female photographer. Think of it this way - if she'll go this far to "win" this contest - what else is she cheating at? Definitely someone who can not be trusted at all. Was it really her who took the picture in the first place?? Makes ya wonder don't it?

Very much so! I have wondered this completely from the moment she walked away with that check... Even worst, I found out last night while at work from a good friend and another entry photographer of the contest that the photograph was taken with a P&S camera and no RAW file to provide proof of it being her's.

This was rule number 1: You MUST be able to provide judges with the winning .RAW format from your camera with the EXIF information. Failure to do so... and so on. The judges, didn't even ask for the .RAW format nor the EXIF.

You would have to put those who rigged the vote in the same category as the person that set it up. They are all as guilty as the original perpetrator. That being said I have to ask myself, are you more upset over not getting first place or are you upset about not winning the prize money? If first place paid $10.00 would you have even bothered to mention it.

I'm going to break this down very simply!
I don't care much about the money, if was a $2.00 grand prize or 20,000.00 grand prize. Would I have mentioned it? Yes, because we all need to be aware of other's who "cheat". I am more upset over the fact that not only was I cheated, but every other photographer who entered was as well. Hope this helps you understand a bit more.

I have no way of doing so? This was not an internet contest. I have no possible way of getting that photograph on my computer for upload...
