The 1/4 20 hole on my aluminum lens collar is worn down to its last thread. Is there a way to repair it? has anyone tried heli-coils?

If it works for a cylinder head, it should work for a lens collar. Can you remove the collar and buy a new one - as a last resort?

its an old 2.8 300mm tamron, replacement part probably not available but it is easily removed if you have a reccomendation for repair. not enough room to simply drill/tap another hole

You might take the Lens Collar to a machine shop and ask someone if they can drill out the hole, and either tap in or press in a 1/4x20 collar that they might make for you, threaded or press fit. This could be expensive, depending on the machinist, who might also be willing to offer an opinion re the heli-coil.

Could a 1/4 x 20 nut be attached to it?

not enough clearance jerryc41 for a nut. there is a 3/8" threaded hole in the collar if they make a reducer to 1/4 20. ever heard of such an animal?

Drill it out and use a bottoming tap to take it to a 3/8"x16 hole and insert a standard 1/4x20 to 3/8x16 adapter that comes with almost all tripod heads, big advantage to it being made of steel also. Use Blue threadlocker to make sure it stays in place once seated.

I thought of that 3/8" adapter, but how would that work with the 1/4" bolt on the tripod?

Jerry41c came through with a fix which will be stronger and more wear resistant than the original. Thanks to everyone who responded.
