These are magnificent! They remind me of our Whip-poor-wills.

Taking pics of birds perched in trees can be a little uninspiring but sometimes the expression on their faces makes it worthwhile. These birds are tawny frogmouths, they are not owls as many people think but they are night hunters hence the big eyes. They have fantastic camouflage and when approached they stretch themselves out and up and sit perfectly still. They look exactly like a small stump on a tree and so are very difficult to see in the daytime let alone photograph. So there we were having breakfast outside when I just happened to catch a glimpse of one of these in the mango tree at the end of my garden. The one turned out to be a family of four, two adults and two seriously cute babies. never seen a family like this before so very excited. Fiendishly difficult to photograph because they were hidden away amongst the leaves but after a lot of messing about with my trusty step ladder I managed to get a couple of close ups. I hope you like them.
