Black & White or Color?

I shot this photograph on Boat House Row in Philadelphia last weekend of a street vendor feeding the pigeons. I was wondering which format is most appropriate? B&W or Color?

I love B&W, but it looks like you've lost some detail in the shadows so I think the color version works better for me.

I agree, I love black and white, but something is lost in the shadows. The color works better for me.

Perhaps cepia? Since it has an old world feel to it - it might not work out but what the heck.

I like it in black and white as well and agree you've lost some details in the shadows in the conversation. I struggle with b/w conversations as I tend to make them a little muddy looking so you're doing better than me :)

What editing software are you using?

The pigeons and the background clash to me in both photos (B&W and color) I think it would have been a wonderful B&W had the buildings not been in the shot, but some times we cannot help what is there and have to take the shot we have available to us.

@ MWAC...I use Photoshop. The B&W photo came out underexposed in the conversion from PSD to jpeg. I used adjustment layers & a high-pass filter layer on the color. Initial post-production was a conversion of raw-dng and edited it with the Camera Raw plug-in that ships with Photoshop.

Me too...I am looking for a possible solution to this, but I have not found it yet.

Check out the TOPAZ B&W filter plug-in. It makes Black and White the in thing. Google it watch the videos on you tube. Its new and on sale for half price for a few more days.

my opinion is black and white. Im not going to comment on anything else because you ask that specific question. That being said I automatically go black in white when I have a seasoned person in the photo and pigeons, well as ridiculous as that sounds, its honest

I have a really tough time trying to decide when to use B&W and when not to, myself! Only thing I do, is play around with both and see what I like.

I tend to think that if there's good contrast, and the photo is a simple one (in other words, doesn't have a lot of "clutter" ) then it should translate to B&W nicely, but that's not always the case.

In this case, unfortunately, the pigeons translated as "clutter" for me... which is a shame, 'cause I was gonna vote for the B&W version. :)

I kinda like the b&w better. Perhaps try adding a gradient map, then duplicate layer & high pass (depending on what suits you), change that layer to overlay, crop? Just my opinion... That's my take on it anyways.

I like the color one. In the black & white the pigeons are lost with all that's going on. In the color one, the pigeons take on importance.
